FRANCOIS SABLET (1745-1819) Portrait d'un révolutionnaire

    Est: €6,000 - €8,000

FRANCOIS SABLET (1745-1819) Portrait d'un révolutionnaire Portrait of a revolutionary, oil on unlined canvas 23,5 x 20 cm. In his original period frame. Signed on the lower left of the hand. Swiss painter, Jean-François Sablet was born in Morges. He studied with his father, the painter and picture dealer Jacob Sablet (1720–1798), before moving to Paris in 1772. There, he and his younger brother Jacques-Henri Sablet (1749–1803) both studied at the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture as pupils of Joseph-Marie Vien. Jean-François studied at the Académie in 1768–1773 and Jacques-Henri in 1772–1775. Although their careers did not follow a similar course, the attribution of their works has frequently been confused. In 1791 Jean-François left Paris for Rome to join his brother Jacques-Henri. While there he concentrated on landscapes, also depicting people in local costume. In February 1793 Jean-François Sablet was obliged to leave Rome with the rest of the French community and by October was in Paris as a member of the Revolutionary Commune des Arts. He produced a number of Revolutionary portraits, including Joseph-Agricol Viala, William Tell and Lycurgus (all untraced), but spent most of his time quietly in Normandy. In 1802 he worked in Paris for the printmakers Francesco Piranesi (1758-1810) and his brother Pietro Piranesi (1773-after 1807), the sons of Giovanni Battista Piranesi. In 1805 he established himself in Nantes, producing small-scale portraits of the city's notables with sometimes scathing sincerity. In 1812 he decorated the Le Palais de la Bourse in Nantes, with six large grisailles depicting the Visit of Napoleon to Nantes in 1808.

signed, dated and inscribed F. Sablet/ Paris 1794 oil on panel The sitter in the present portrait would appear to be an officer of the local government at the Municipalité or at the Administration des Sections in the revolutionary government of the Convention, as is suggested by the tricolore scarf besides him. Particular attention is given by the artist to the psychological side of the character of the sitter, whose serious demeanor belies the state of the French government at the moment that the portrait was made. The Terror which had begun in earnest in 1793 had-- after a slight lull-- roared into full force again in the spring of 1794, with the execution of the Hébertistes and Danton. The bloodshed had only begun to abate with the overthrow and death of Robespierre himself on the 10th Thermidor (28th of July). The Sablet brothers themselves were ardent Revolutionaries. In February of 1793, just days after France declared war on Britain, Holland and Spain, the Sablets (as well as the entire French community residing in Rome) were forced to leave the Eternal city, where they had set up their practices, painting portraits and genre scenes. In fact, Beat de Hennezel writes that, "les Sablet son partis par l'ordre du gouvernement pour leur democratie & imprudences" (see Literature below, p. 176). From Rome, François travelled north (via Lausanne), finally reaching Paris by October of 1793. While in Paris, he was received as a member of the Revolutionary Commune des Arts, and showed in the Concours de l'an III (that is, 1794 the year the present painting was done). Anne van de Sandt has seen the present painting first hand and confirms it to be by Jean François Sablet.
