Untitled signed and dated 2002 (lower right) oil on canvas 80” x 80” (203 cm x 203 cm) PROVENANCE: León Gallery, The Magnificent September Auction 2014, Makati City, 13 September 2014, Lot 137 The treatment of Carlo Saavedra’s paintings are far from standard: frames hacked with a dull axe, paint overflowing the canvas limits; suggested figures emerging from a coat of mud like mixtures; surfaces abused with the constant process of trial and error. Carlo Saavedra likes to brood. Thus Carlo Saavedra’s works are like palimpsests. Each work is “ugly” according to its creator and the viewer can see what the artist means. Saavedra does not paint pretty things; he prefers to take sidereal impressions of his subject much like occult-figure Austin Osman Spare. To his credit, Saavedra does manage the peculiar trick of transmogrifying the conventional with most startling results. In his work, the subjects may be human, but they are alien in beauty.

Face signed and dated 2015 (lower right) oil on canvas 48 x 60” (122 x 152 cm) * This lot is sold to benefit the Asian Cultural Council PROVENANCE León Gallery, Leon Exchange Online Auction Edition 5: Day 1 The Collector's Vault, Makati City, 21 October 2017, Lot 370 The works of Carlo Saavedra capture the world in both a state of form and decay. Saavedra’s elements are both rudimentary yet fully realized in their treatment. As an artist, Saavedra is not only concerned with the expressive qualities of art itself, but how such expression is attained through the process of creation. This is evident in his masterfully rendered elements which are characterized by their bold and almost erratic gestural strokes that are recognizable enough to forego pure abstraction. Thus, Saavedra’s works can be seen both as an expression of experience and the investigation of the mind. In this particular piece titled Face, Saavedra explores the often vague yet undoubtedly moving power of dreams and the mind itself, and how these come together in a unique sort of embodiment. At the center of the canvas is an undoubtedly human facedone in Saavedra’s signature brand of abstraction. The figure is positioned in such a way that evokes a sense of frankness or even acceptance. While a vague and abstract mass of bright colors seemingly envelops the aforementioned figure, suggesting a sense of mutual interconnectedness between the two central elements. Saavedra brings together these elements in a spiritual and mystical symbiosis as a way of communicating the unseen forces of the mind by virtue of a deliberately abstract treatment that reflects the physical unknowability of the human soul.

    Carlo Angelo Saavedra (b. 1981) - Regenerate

    Est: ₱300,000 - ₱390,000

Carlo Angelo Saavedra (b. 1981) Regenerate signed and dated 2020 (lower right) mixed media on canvas Carlo Angelo Saavedra, a contemporary Filipino painter of near abstracts and semi-figurations, evokes the redemptive and ephemeral quality of dauntless decay. Regenerate showcases the artist’s unique visual language where the watery fluid and overwhelming gestures of his brushworks give way to the vivacity and vitality of living color, often from deep within the recesses of the painterly turmoil below. Saavedra’s work harkens back to the paintings of the 18th century Romantics whose canvases are symbolic of the totality of nature as a form of noumenal salvation. Saavedra’s unique style is full of such Romantic fury, unopposed in its freedom and idealism, yet he also hinges in calm and serene. In the purest sense, his work is a return towards the dialectical nature of art and its environment. Estimate in USD $6000-$7800
