Betye Irene Saar (American, b.1926) In The Woods, 1964 etching and aquatint on wove paper titled, editioned, signed, and dated In the Woods. Proof. Betye Saar. 1964 Saar grew up in Los Angeles and Pasadena, California, and studied design at the University of California, Los Angeles—a career path frequently foisted upon women of color who were interested in the arts, due to the racism and sexism prevalent in universities at the time. Saar eventually studied printmaking, and her earliest works are on paper. Using the soft-ground etching technique, she pressed stamps, stencils, and found materials into her plates to capture their images and textures. Her prints are notably concerned with spirituality, cosmology, and family. Esther Adler. MoMA, New York.

Saar, Betye (b. 1926) The Long Memory.

          Est: $1,200 - $1,800

Saar, Betye (b. 1926) The Long Memory. Washington, D.C.: National Museum of Women in the Arts, 1998. Eighteen-color screenprint on paper, signed, titled, dated, and numbered to bottom margin, limited edition, number 97 of 100, accompanied by the original envelope with museum sticker and handwritten notation identifying the artist and print number in ink, 14 1/2 x 11 3/4 in. [Memory] is [...] a pervasive conceptual trope across all of Saar's creative endeavors. [...] In Keep for Old Memoirs, House of Ancient Memory, and The Long Memory, Saar invokes the power and centrality of memory in her work's conception. Indeed, the act of bearing witness--of remembering--is a strategic orienting tactic in Black feminist thought, cultural history, and politics, and Saar elaborates in haunting artworks such as Memory Window for Anastacia, and in her poem, 'My Secret Heart.'" (Quoted from Betye Saar: Heart of a Wanderer, edited by Diana Seave Greenwald, Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2023, pages 37-38.)

          IMPORTANT BETYE SAAR ASSEMBLAGE

          Est: $15,000 - $20,000

BETYE SAAR (American b. 1926 - ) Unearthing the Future - 1991 Mixed media assemblage box Signed and dated on verso, and with inventory label for Betye Saar LLC, Los Angeles, CA Overall measuring 14 inches x 11 inches x 1.5 inches Provenance Acquired by the present owner directly from the artist and accompanied with a copy of original receipt of purchase dated April 5, 1993 Renowned African American artist Betye Saar, née Betye Irene Brown, (B. 1926 -) is known for her work in printmaking, assemblage, and collage. Saar grew up in Pasadena, California, and studied interior design at the University of California, Los Angeles, before later shifting away from design into printmaking. She became an accomplished printmaker, and in the 1960’s began to emerge as a major voice in American art. Inspired by a Joseph Cornell exhibition, Saar soon began to incorporate found objects and assemblage into her creative process and displaying these works in window box frames. Throughout the 1960’s and onward, her art became increasingly concerned with race and political undertones, fueled deeply by the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King Jr, shortly after which she created two of her most notable works; Black Girl’s Window - 1969, and The Liberation of Aunt Jemima - 1972. In addition to the exploration of the influence of race, Saar’s work also explores mystical unknowns and the passage of time. The artist states on her website “I am intrigued with combining the remnant of memories, fragments of relics and ordinary objects, with the components of technology. It's a way of delving into the past and reaching into the future simultaneously. The art itself becomes the bridge.” This sentiment is wholly displayed in the offered lot, which utilizes imagery of ancient relics, computer fragments, and human hands to visually intertwine the mysteries of history, humanity, and technology.
