      A very rare opportunity to own a Original Leslie Saalburg (American, 1897-1994) "Royal Ascot". Signed by the artist under the mat. Pencil, pen and black india ink, watercolour and gouache. Elegantly dressed English gentleman at the Royal Ascot Races. Wearing hacking jackets and with binoculars. Saalburg emphasized that elegance was something only few would be able to achieve, and Royal Ascot remained one of his few remaining bastions of elegance. The hallmark of Saalburg’s work has always been his attention to detail as evidenced in this illustration. Everything is done meticulously, in truly elegant fashion. Leslie Saalburg was born in London in 1897 to American parents. His father was a political cartoonist for a San Francisco paper, as well as for The Chicago Examiner and The New York World. An iconic illustrator and advertising artist Leslie Saalburg was one of the true masters of of menswear illustrators. Leslie Saalburg provided illustrations for Esquire, Apparel Arts, Town and Country, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Holiday, Collier’s, as well as other periodicals, for as long as two decades in some cases. The hallmark of Saalburg’s work has always been his attention to detail. Everything was done meticulously, in truly elegant fashion. After Saalburg visited Europe in 1922, he left his home in NYC nearly every year in order to spend some time in Europe – he was particularly attracted to Paris and England.
