SALOMON VAN RUYSDAEL LANDSCAPE WITH A FARMHOUSERIVERSCAPE WITH A FERRYBOAT

    Est: €400,000 - €600,000

SALOMON VAN RUYSDAEL LANDSCAPE WITH A FARMHOUSE RIVERSCAPE WITH A FERRYBOAT On the bottom right (Riverscape) eg. left (Dune landscape) monogrammed and dated: SvR (vR joinedt) 1634 Dimensions : Each 63 x 74,5 cm (oval) Provenance Former Perdoux collection, Paris, 1924. - Private collection, Germany. Certificate Walther Bernt, Munich, 7.4.1977 (one expertise for each painting). The two oval landscapes are dated 1634. Hence they derive from the decade that was of eminent importance for the development of Dutch landscape painting, in which a young generation of paintings developed a new concept of the rendition of nature. One painting shows a farmstead with horse and cart and peasants, the other a river with a ferryboat transporting cattle and peasants. The composition of the two paintings obviously refer to each other, and it seems as if the artist wanted to demonstrate what the new form of landscape painting had achieved. The river landscape indicates the elements of this new landscape painting. A diagonal line, formed by the trees at the embankment, connects the fore-, middle- and the background, creating a unified pictorial space. The diagonal at the same time leads the eye towards the distance, where the silhouette of a town can be seen. The horizon is extremely low, so that the depiction of the sky and the clouds are allowed plenty of space. How bold the conception of the pictorial space is can be seen by the fact that the foreground consists only of the rendition of the water. This enables the artist to depict the reflections of the sky, the trees, and the figures in the water. Altogether, the ephemeral phenomena of nature - air, wind, water, light - in their fleetingness, are the protagonists of these landscape paintings. The unified pictorial space, the reduction of the palette to a few green, grey and brown tones and the rendition of elements visualise the atmosphere, the width and depth of the landscape in a new way. A comparable pair of landscapes exists that was painted the previous year (fig. 1 and 2; Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden). Its composition is, except for a few details, simlar to these paintings. Ruysdael was probably aware of the aethetic impression that the juxtaposition of two oval paintings, representing two different types of landscapes, made on beholders. margin scheme

Kleinberger, Paris (as a joint work by Ruysdael and Van Goyen); E. Sarasin-Von der Muhll, Basel (Stechow lists as Sarasin; Von der Muhll, Basel). Literature & References: W. Stechow, Salomon van Ruysdael, 2nd, revised ed., Berlin 1975, p. 80, cat. no. 83A. Catalogue Note: Salomon van Ruysdael is perhaps best known for his river landscapes, which he painted throughout his career. The River Landscape with Three Rowboats is a classic example of what is usually referred to as his tonal period, which began in the early 1630s. Working in tandem with Jan van Goyen, by whom he was influenced and whom he in turn influenced, Ruysdael developed a color scheme and a compositional template to bring a unity and focus to his landscapes that was lacking in the previous generation's work. Moving away from the local color of his predecessors, he used a palette dominated by muted grays, greens and browns, to create a more harmonious effect. At the same time he employed a system of diagonals to organize his works, as here where the line of the boats in the foreground rises from the lower left to the middle right, balancing the sharper angle of the line of trees descending from the upper left, and creating a stable composition. Comparing the River Landscape with Three Rowboats to other works from this same period, such as the River Bank with Old Trees (Stechow, Op. cit., fig. 16), also of 1633, in the Mauritshuis, one sees how characteristic a work this is. Not only are the organizing principles comparable, but Ruysdael also repeats specific motifs, such as the blasted tree that anchors the composition at the left and the sailboat on the horizon at the right. But perhaps most satisfying is his use of the reflections in the water as a counterweight and an echo of the clouded sky and above.

ATTRIBUTED TO SALOMON VAN RUYSDAEL (1600/02-1670) RIVER SCENE WITH BOATS BEFORE A DENSELY WOODED BANK.

    Est: -

Bears old numbering in pen and brown ink on the verso: No.410. Black chalk and grey wash. 102 by 214 mm. Provenance: Freiherr M. von Heyl zu Herrnsheim (L.2879); Dr. M.K.H. Rech (L.2745b). The extensive underdrawing found in so many of Salomon van Ruysdael's landscape paintings is often held up as the explanation for the fact that no preparatory drawings for these paintings are known; the artist appears simply to have drawn directly onto the panel or canvas, rather than working out his compositions in advance on paper. In the absence also of any surviving signed sheets, the attribution of drawings to this central figure of Dutch landscape art therefore depends on stylistic comparison with the underdrawings in his paintings, and on their general compositional similarities with the artist's painted works. On both these criteria, there would appear to be a good case for including this subtly constructed and delicately executed drawing in the small corpus of Ruysdael's works on paper. In a number of his paintings of the 1630s, Ruysdael turned away from the very powerful diagonal compositions for which he is best known and painted scenes such as this, depicting small numbers of boats by wooded riverbanks which lie more or less parallel to the picture plane; an example of a painting constructed in this way which is strikingly similar to the present drawing in its compositional conception is the Riverbank with two leafless trees of 1633, in The Hague (Mauritshuis, inv. 941; see Wolfgang Stechow, Salomon van Ruysdael, Berlin 1975, cat. 498A, fig.16). Dr. Wolfgang Schulz, however, while confiming that he believes this to be an autograph drawing of high quality, suggests a date of around 1640-44. Other drawings that can plausibly be attributed to Salomon van Ruysdael are to be found in Berlin, Paris (Louvre and Institut Neerlandais) and Rotterdam (see Dessins de Paysagists Hollandais du XVIIe Siecle, exhib. cat. Brussels/Rotterdam/Paris /Berne 1968-69, vol. I (catalogue), p.131).
