Rudge was born in 1813, probably the son of a Birmingham artist who taught at Rugby School. He moved to Bedford in 1837 and became the first drawing master at Bedford Grammar School. The Frasers were among his pupils - their father was a retired army surgeon who moved to Bedford from Edinburgh, because the Harpur Trust at Bedford paid for the education of his seven sons.
