RAMÓN MUÑOZ RUBIO (Jaén, 1867 - Madrid, 1910). "Cross of May". Oil on canvas. It has perforations. Preserves old frame. Signed in the lower right corner. Size: 33 x 48 cm; 42,5 x 57 cm (frame). Ramón Muñoz Rubio trained at the Special School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving of San Fernando, in Madrid. He began to make himself known at a very young age, and in 1878 he took part in an official exhibition, the Fine Arts Exhibition in Jaén. Later, at the beginning of the 20th century, he took part in the National Fine Arts Exhibitions held in Madrid in 1908 and 1910, receiving honourable mentions on both occasions. Muñoz Rubio painted history, allegory and genre subjects, although he was chiefly known as a portraitist. His models included Javier Gómez de la Serna and Modesto Conde Caballero, as well as friends and colleagues such as the painter Abelló, whom he portrayed during his stay in Terrassa, where he also painted a magnificent portrait of his granddaughter Laura, now in the collection of his heirs. He was also a painter to consuls and politicians. As part of his genre scenes, he painted so-called "casacones", which depict historical scenes of the second half of the 18th century. He spent his last years in Madrid, in the Nido de Cigarras residence, where he lived independently with other artists of his generation. Muñoz Rubio is currently represented in the Museo del Prado, as well as in various private collections.

Gallant, cheerful and colourful scene, worked with precious and descriptive workmanship, similar to the painting of "casacones", in vogue during the last third of the 19th century, a genre of manners in which Muñoz Rubio excelled. Ramón Muñoz Rubio trained at the Special School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving in Madrid.
