Richard Ruben (1925-1998) "Abstract" Mixed Media on Paper. Pastel and Ink Wash. In 1942, Ruben was drafted into the United States Army, where he served till 1944. During the 1950's and early 1960's, he exhibited his work at two most prominent galleries in Los Angeles — Paul Kantor Gallery and Ferus Gallery. In the early 1960's, he settled down in New York City and started to collaborate with Poindexter Gallery, where he exhibited his works. Ruben’s first mature paintings of the 1950s, often derived from landscape and twisting body forms, exhibit a muscularity of shape and a sensuosity of paint as well as an interest in calligraphic line. In the next decade Ruben began to incorporate symmetry and eventually a geometric order into his art and became increasingly concerned with the interrelationship of pure paint and perception. By the 1970's, his paintings consisted of lightly colored, highly impastoed surfaces, into which linear configurations were etched.
