Beginning of 20th century. Canvas. oil. 82x120 cm Kārlis Rozens. 1864–1934 Rozens studied art at the Landscape Painting Workshop of Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts under the most renowned Russian landscape artists of the time Ivan Shishkin and Fedor Burov. At the same time he was also trained by the Baltic-German artist Julius von Klever. From 1918. Kārlis Rozens lived and worked in Latvia. participating in several exhibitions organised by the Independent Artists’ Union. and in 1927. he held the only known solo exhibition during his lifetime. Kārlis Rozens represents the conservative academic style of painting. Consistently painting only landscapes. K. Rozens depicted different seasonal sceneries. paying special attention to light and the emotional quality of his works. The artist was inspired by the late 19th century Russian traditions of realism. The painter’s delicate nature sceneries with romantic light effects were popular among his peers and are still unfailingly praised by art lovers and collectors. Winter landscapes were his strong suit. The work up for auction. depicting the setting winter sun. horse-drawn sleigh and detailed tree in the background. is one of the best examples of K. Rozens’ artistic heritage.
