Thomas Rowlandson, son of a wool and silk merchant, studied at the Royal Academy Schools between 1772 and 1778 where he developed his skills as a draughtsman. His work is unique for a Royal Academy student as he chose never to work with oils and instead chose to produce sketches and etchings. His works are heavily infulenced by French artistic practice, and he began to work in watercolour from 1773.
