    PASTEL PORTRAIT OF A GERMAN NOBLEMAN BY JOHANN ROUX (1806-1880). Germany, 1830. Pastel on paper or vellum. Finely drawn portrait depicting a man with wavy white hair, wearing a white cravat and black jacket adorned with two black and silver crosses. Sight, 14"h. 11"w. In gilt wood frame, 18.5"h. 15.75"w. Cataloguer's note: Information on verso identifies the sitter as Ernst or Moritz von Baumbach, who settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1856. From the collection of the late Neil Zuehlke, Heartland, Wisconsin.

With gilt ornamental surround, taped behind glass (opened on back). Roux was a successful portrait painter most famous for his pastels. He also made daguerreotypes to enrich his portraiture business. His works are in the collection of the Landesmuseum Kassel. - Slight oxidation in edges, otherwise a clear image in very good condition. Lit.: Thieme/Becker.
