  • GUILLERMO ROUX (Buenos Aires, 1929-2021). "The cart". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner.
    Nov. 09, 2023

GUILLERMO ROUX (Buenos Aires, 1929-2021). "The cart". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner.

    Est: €5,000 - €6,000

GUILLERMO ROUX (Buenos Aires, 1929-2021) . "The cart". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Size: 69,5 x 69,5 cm; 108 x 108 cm (frame). In this painting by Guillermo Roux, a toy cart appears leaning on a shelf. The interior lighting of the object, the black silhouettes visible on the carriage and the particular way in which the toy comes to life give it a surreal aspect. This mysterious way of making the everyday collide with magic was characteristic of the painter. Technically, he practised an elaborate figuration in his textures and impregnated with warm shades. Guillermo Roux was an Argentinean painter, considered one of the leading figures of surrealism in his country. The first to recognise his pictorial work was the art critic Rafael Squirru, who took him to exhibit at the Bonino gallery in Buenos Aires in 1972. He entered the international scene in 1973, when he exhibited at Marlborough Fine Arts in London and the following year in Munich. In 1975 he won the First International Prize at the XIII Biennial of Sao Paulo. He then made numerous trips to Paris, Rome and Sicily. He had exhibitions in 1977 at Jeanne Bucher in Paris, in 1982 at the 11th Venice Biennale, in 1988 at the Phillips Collection in Washington D.C., USA and in 1990 at the KunstHalle in Berlin. In Argentina, in 1996, he held a retrospective exhibition at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes. Characterised by a great versatility in the forms of expression, he produced drawings, watercolours, tempera and collages. Roux achieved refined degrees of perception in the graphics and colours that set the tonality. His work as a whole shows a strong influence of surrealism. His work includes El collar de perlas (1975), La valse (1977), Isolabella (1992), Paisaje con el Etna (1998) and Maja y torero con instrumentos musicales (1998). In the 1990s he produced a large work entitled Mujer y máscaras (Woman and Masks), which is on display at the Galerías Pacífico in Buenos Aires, with the theme of Italian harlequins and comedians, dabbling in surrealism (figures covered up, hiding their faces). Another large work is La Ronda, a canvas measuring 2.5 metres by 4 metres, which is on display at the entrance of the Palacio Duhau, where the Park Hyatt hotel is located. His last monumental work is La Constitución guía al pueblo, a mural measuring 7 metres by 3.5 metres, created to decorate the legislature of the province of Santa Fe. In 1982 he received the Konex Platinum Award as the most important surrealist painter in the history of Argentina.5 In 2007 he was designated by the legislature as "Illustrious Citizen of the City of Buenos Aires". He was a full member of the National Academy of Fine Arts.6 In 2011 he painted the mural "The Constitution guides the people", installed in the Chamber of Deputies of Santa Fe.
