Note: Harriet Selina Pettigrew (1867-1953) commonly known as 'Hetty' Pettigrew was a prominent model in the London art world of the late 19th Century. She had a close relationship with the French painter Theodore Roussel who she met in 1884 and frequently modelled for him. It seems likely this print was a gift from the artist to his model and muse. French-born, Roussel (1847-1926) settled in England in 1878. He met Whistler in 1885 when the two became neighbors in Chelsea and they were subsequently life-long friends. Roussel took up etching and lithography around 1888 with Whistler's encouragement.

'The gate and house behind it still stand today at No.4 Cheyne Walk.     Theodore Casimir Roussel (1847-1926), The Chinese Gown, lithograph, 22cm x 19cm Theodore Roussel moved to England in 1874 and set up his studio in Chelsea, not far from where Whistler lived. Whistler is known to have sought Roussel out specifically, first meeting him in 1885. It was as a result of this contact that Theodore Roussel was convinced to commit himself fully towards printmaking. The model is Harriet Pettigrew, Roussel's favourite, wearing an oriental 'opera cloak' thought to have been a studio prop shared with Whistler
