Georges (1871) Rouault Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Draft draughtsman, b. 1871 - d. 1958

Artist Georges Rouault, born in Paris in 1871, studied alongside famous artists like Henri Matisse and Albert Marquet, in classes taught at the École des Beaux-Arts under Symbolist painter Gustave Moreau. A large portion of painter Georges Rouault's work focuses on portraits, religious scenes, and still lifes. Influenced by the artist's strong faith as a Roman Catholic, many Georges Rouault figural paintings for sale feature either Jesus or the immorality of the Parisian court.

Artist Georges Rouault underwent several artistic shifts throughout his career, the first being a move away from academic styles in favor of a combination of Expressionism and Fauvism. The second stylistic change began when Rouault started using oil more than watercolor, choosing to paint in thick layers, with colors and lines that echoed stained glass. Discover new artists by browsing the many evocative figural paintings for sale online and at auction.

    Georges Rouault (French, b. 1871, d, 1958) "Les Visages" Lithograph 1933 FRAMED

    Est: -

Georges-Henri Rouault (French]; 27 May 1871, Paris - 13 February 1958, Paris) was a French painter, draughtsman, and printmaker, whose work is often associated with Fauvism and Expressionism. 'Les Visages,' 'The Faces,' is the subject of the work. The litho utilizes a monochromatic palette, predominantly black and white, which emphasizes the stark contrasts between light and shadow. The work features three human faces, each occupying a distinct section of the composition. Rouault employs a distorted and exaggerated approach to facial features, and renders them with bold brushstrokes, capturing both their individuality and expression while also skillfully balancing abstraction with recognizable features.. The leftmost face within the composition, exhibits a troubled expression with wide eyes, pupils dilated, suggesting fear or anxiety. The mouth is contorted, perhaps conveying pain or uncomfortableness. Lines emphasize the cheekbones, contributing to the face’s intensity and dimensions. The central face appears stoic and mysterious. The eyes are downcast, concealing emotions and the elongated nose and high forehead create heightened expressionism. The rightmost face exudes anguish and vulnerability; the mouth is open, as if caught mid-scream. Deep furrows on the forehead and around the eyes convey emotional strain, again, highlighting specific feelings and emotions throughout the variety of subjects. The three faces symbolize the multifaceted nature of human experience. Each face represents a different emotional state—fear, mystery, and anguish. BORD DE MER, PAYSAGE ANIMÉ, UM 1916 Tempera auf Karton. 79 x 57,2 cm. Rechts unten signiert und datiert „Georges Rouault 1916“. Gerahmt. Signed and dated lower right “Georges Rouault 1916”. Accompanied by an expert’s report by Isabelle Rouault, in copy. From the two bottom corners of the painting a brown path stretches along some houses and a church to a large ultramarine blue field, which may be interpreted as the sea with an exaggerated curvature of the earth, arching upwards over the horizon, in front of gently rolling fields. Three figures are depicted on the path, up close with their feet seemingly almost touching the lower edge of the painting. Provenance: Charles Hall Thorndike collection (acquired by him from artist). Label on reverse with attribution, authentication, and title: "Les Visages."  Overall Size: 15 1/2 x 18 1/4 in.  Sight Size: 6 1/4 x 8 in.  #4743   Georges-Henri Rouault was born on May 27th, 1871 into a poor Parisian family whose home had been destroyed in the Paris Insurrection of that same year. His mother encouraged his love for the arts, and in 1885 Rouault entered an apprenticeship as a glass painter and restorer which lasted for five years. During this period he also attended evening classes at the School of Fine Arts, and in 1891 he entered the École des Beaux-Arts. There he studied under Gustave Moreau, and his earliest works show a symbolism in the use of color that reflects his influence. When Moreau died in 1898 Rouault had become his favorite pupil, and was nominated as the curator of the Moreau Museum in Paris. In 1894 Rouault won the Prix Chenavard, and from then on he took part in major public exhibitions, notably the Salon d’Automne (which he helped to found), where paintings with religious subjects, landscapes, and still lifes were shown. Rouault made close friendships with Henri Matisse, Albert Marquet, Henri Manguin, and Charles Camoin, which brought him to the movement of Fauvism. In 1907 Rouault commenced a series of paintings dedicated to courts, clowns, and prostitutes that were widely interpreted as moral and social criticism. He became attracted to Spiritualism and the dramatic existentialism of the philosopher Jacques Maritain, who remained a close friend for the rest of his life. His works from the beginning of World War I onward became more and more informed by Christian motifs and inspiration, and he devoted himself fully to painting once the war ended. In 1929 Rouault created the designs for Sergei Diaghilev’s ballet The Prodigal Son, which led to exhibitions in foreign countries, mainly in major cities like London, New York, and Chicago. World War II had a chilling effect on his work, life, and mental state, and he became withdrawn and disillusioned after witnessing the brutality of the Nazis and the devastation of his homeland. In the mid 1950s he was diagnosed with lung cancer and burnt roughly three hundred unfinished paintings, stating that he felt he would not live to finish them. He passed away in his home in Paris on February 13th, 1958, and it was nearly four decades before there was a resurgence in interest in his work when his daughter Genevieve published a comprehensive biography of his life, complete with reproduced illustrations from his early and later years that were thought to have been lost.
