(Laufen an der Salzach 1654–1730 Vienna) Joseph and Potiphar’s wife, monogrammed and dated lower left: MR (ligated) / 1695., oil on canvas, 96.5 x 134 cm, framed Provenance: possibly Collection of Joseph Leicher (1765–1838), Vienna, 1820s; Private collection, Budapest, circa 1928; sale, Nagyházi Gallery and Auction House, Budapest, 5 December 2006, lot 75; where acquired by the present owner Literature: possibly F. H. Böck, Wiens Lebende Schriftsteller, Künstler, und Dilettanten im Kunstfache. Dann Bücher-Kunst-und Naturschätze und Andere Sehenswürdigkeiten Dieser haupt und Residenz-Stadt. Ein Handbuch für Einheimische und Fremde, Vienna 1822, p. 321; possibly T. von Frimmel, Lexikon der Wiener Gemäldesammlungen. Geschichte der Wiener Gemäldesammlungen, Munich 1914, vol. II, p. 514, under J. Leicher; A. Pigler, Barockthemen. Jahrhunderts, vol. I, Budapest/Berlin 1956, p. 81, illustrated p. 79 The present monogrammed and dated painting was created during the early period of the master’s career in Salzburg between 1687 and 1698. It was in these years that the works of the Italian Seicento artists are echoed in Rottmayr’s paintings, as seen in the present composition by its rich colour palette, the monumental archetypal forms, the contrasts accentuated by light effects, and the decorative draperies. As a pupil and assistant, Rottmayr trained with the Munich artist Johann Carl Loth in Venice between 1675 and 1687. For the composition of the present painting Rottmayr must have been familiar with a work by his master, depicting the same subject in a vertical composition which is conserved in the Joanneum in Graz (inv. no. 124). Besides the work by Loth, the work offered here relates to two pairs of paintings by the artist, all depicting biblical, mythological, and historical female protagonists. The first pair is Rottmayr’s Lucretia and Tarquinius (signed and dated 1692) with Susanna and the Elders, both conserved in the Belvedere in Vienna (inv. nos. 3808 and 3798). The other pair of pendants depicts Sophonisba receiving the cup of Poison and Cleopatra and Marcus Antonius, both conserved in the National Gallery in Prague (inv. nos. 20 and 22). As all four mentioned works mirror each other’s diagonal compositions and are painted on horizontal canvases, it could very well be that the present work originally formed a pair with another work by Rottmayr, which remains unknown. Rottmayr is known to have been an influential master of Baroque fresco and altarpiece painting in Central Europe, his self portrait is conserved in the Wien Museum in Vienna (inv. no. 12929; see fig. 1). After his years in Italy the artist worked in Salzburg and Vienna where he was responsible for large scale painting commissions. He decorated newly built Baroque churches and palaces; including the frescos at the Liechtenstein Garden Palace, the Karlskirche in Vienna, and the Abbey Church of Melk, amongst others. In recognition of his outstanding artistic work, Emperor Leopold I raised Rottmayr to the rank of nobility by granting him the title Von Rosenbrunn in 1704.

  • Michael Rottmayr 1654 Salisburgo-1730 Vienna Lot e le figlie
    Jun. 13, 2024

Michael Rottmayr 1654 Salisburgo-1730 Vienna Lot e le figlie

    Est: €8,000 - €12,000

  • Johann Michael Rottmayr: The Good Samaritan

Johann Michael Rottmayr: The Good Samaritan

    Est: €20,000 - €40,000

Johann Michael Rottmayr The Good Samaritan c. 1685-95 oil on canvas 148.5 x 196 cm Christie's New York, 21 May 1992, lot 79; collection Erna Weidinger (1923–2021) Under the influence of his teacher, Johann Carl Loth (1632-1698), Johann Michael Rottmayr developed into a master of moving figurative portrayals within Austrian Baroque painting. Born in Salzburg, he joined Loth's Venetian workshop as early as 1675, where he internalised his style of dramatic chiaroscuro painting combined with expressive body modelling. The painting shows the parable of the Good Samaritan (Lk 10, 25-37), which symbolises Christian charity. The drama of the healing is made more dynamic by the diagonal arrangement of the almost life-size, unclothed body with strong foreshortening. The present work is particularly close to a composition of the same subject by Johann Carl Loth in the Herzog-Anton-Ulrich-Museum, Braunschweig (inv. no. GG 729) (cf. Giuseppe Fusari, Johann Carl Loth (1632-1698), Soncino 2017, no. 21, plate XI). Several variants of the theme are documented by both Johann Carl Loth and Johann Michael Rottmayr (cf. Erich Hubala, Johann Michael Rottmayr, Vienna/Munich 1981, p. 219, no. G 174).

Maria Magdalena / Mary Magdalene, oil on canvas, prima tela / undoubled original canvas, 110 x 93 cm, unframed, (Wo) Provenance: nobility, Graz Certificate / perizia: Johann Kronbichler, Director of the Diözesanmuseum St. Pölten, 15 June 2004: “With the delicate plastic modelling of the body, achieved through subtle transitions of light and dark, and due to the painterly refinement of the figure's rendering and the brilliant colouring, Mary Magdelene is represented here as characteristic female type. In terms of textural qualities, the golden hair accentuated with highlights is particularly charmful.” Kronbichler dates the painting to the mid 1790s. / Rottmayr travelled to Rome, where he worked with Pietro da Cortona. In 1675 he went to Venice, where he stayed in the workshop of Carl Loth called Carlotto for 13 years. He is the most important representative of Austrian High Baroque. As we are celebrating the 350th anniversary of his birth this year, the reappearance of this so far unknown painting may in a way be regarded as a birthday present. The artist worked primarily in Salzburg and Vienna, creating frescoes, ceiling decorations and altarpieces. The present work is one of the most delicate, Italianate, and beautiful examples from his oeuvre. See also the preface to this catalogue.
