      Est: $4,000 - $6,000

JUDITH ROTHSCHILD Untitled. Gouache, ink and paper collage on reddish orange wove paper, double-sided, circa 1945. 230x307 mm; 9¼x12¼ inches. Provenance: Estate of the artist; The Judith Rothschild Foundation, Philadelphia; private collection, Chicago. According to the Richard Gray Gallery, Chicago, with whom the Estate of Judith Rothschild has worked closely with in past years, "Rothschild (1921-1993), a brilliant colorist with a keen eye for composition, gained success as a young artist in New York in the 1940s. Following her graduation from Wellesley College in 1943, Rothschild studied at the Art Students League with Reginald Marsh, at Stanley William Hayter's Atelier 17, and with Hans Hofmann and Karl Knaths. Recognized as a gifted and precocious abstract painter, in 1945 she became a member of the Jane Street group, which included artists Leland Bell, Nell Blaine, Jane Freilicher, and Larry Rivers. Her first solo exhibition was held at their space, Jane Street Gallery, in December 1945. Firmly rooted in the order of Cubism but painted with the vitality of an emergent talent, Rothschild's paintings and collages retain a freshness in rhythm with contemporary sensibilities, worthy of reexamination. Rothschild was a member and later president of the American Abstract Artists, an editor of Leonardo magazine, and is well known for her philanthropic foundation aiding artist estates in their preservation of work and materials. Her work is included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, among others."

In Rothschild's Shiled of Achilles, and Eidolon series, we can clearly see her influence from Henri Matisse's Cutout work. Judith Rothschild saw the Pierre Matisse Retrospective at Grand Palais, Paris in 1970. The luscious figurative forms employed in her works of the 1980s are broken down and rearranged as abstract elements within the overall composition.

Rothschild, dated, '70, and inscribed as titled, on backing. Provenance: The Artist; Private collection, Philadelphia, PA. This work is registered with the Judith Rothschild Foundation (no. 70.18). In the mid-1950s until the late 1960s, Rothschild's work shows strong influence from her mentor, Karl Knaths. Nauset Heights III is a breaking point in her career. Though she would retain the Ostwald Color System learned from Knaths, she begins to eliminate the use of hard line, and fractured picture plane so defining in the work of Kaths throughout his career.
