SIR WILLIAM ROTHENSTEIN (BRITISH 1872-1945) Sir William Rothenstein (lot 76) and Albert Rutherston (lots 77-82) Introduction Raised in Bradford as two of six children of Jewish immigrants, William and Albert both achieved considerable influence at the very heart of the British art establishment. Amongst their many and remarkable strengths they were painters, printmakers, illustrators, teachers, administrators, gallerists and, in William’s case, an accomplished and prolific writer. William was the first to move south to study under Alphonse Legros at the Slade (1888-89) before attending the Académie Julian in Paris (1889-1893), where he was encouraged by Whistler, Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec and befriended Rodin. Albert followed him a decade later to the Slade, where by then Fred Brown was professor, assisted by Henry Tonks, Philip Wilson Steer and Walter Russell. The youngest student by far, Albert fell in with a gilded set of like-minded spirits, in particular Augustus John and William Orpen. The young trio was dubbed by William ‘The Three Musketeers’. Albert went on to win separate prizes for both drawing and painting and was awarded a Slade scholarship. On his return from France William established himself as a talented portraitist illustrating Oxford Characters in 1896 with twenty-four lithographs. It was one of several collections of portraits depicting men and women of distinction that William would produce. In 1900 William’s painting The Dolls House (after Ibsen’s eponymous play), won a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, the same year as his book on Goya was published. Such foreboding influences, however, contrasted with the many happy and light-filled works he produced following his marriage to Alice Knewstub in 1899. For Albert and his fellow ‘Musketeers’ the new century heralded trips to France. There he met Walter Sickert and shared holidays with William, Spencer Gore and Slade teacher Walter Russell. In London Albert thrived on Fitzroy Street and exhibited with William, Sickert, Gore, Russell and Harold Gilman. Sickert recalled their efforts ‘to create a Salon d’automne milieu in London’. Towards the end of the 1910s Albert turned increasingly to decorative designs. In 1911 he collaborated with Roger Fry on large scale murals for Borough Polytechnic and worked on a number of designs for the ballet and theatre. He changed his name to Rutherston in 1916. After the War he married Marjory Holman, taught at Camberwell School of Art, and the Oxford School of Drawing, Painting and Design, and was appointed Master of the Ruskin School of Art (1929-49). A late but important influence in his life was the young model Patricia Koring whom he met in 1938. From the First World War on William’s work revolved around painting, teaching and writing. During 1917-18 he spent six months as an official War artist at the Front (lot 76), and was briefly visiting Professor of Civic Art at Sheffield University. In 1920 he became Principal of the Royal College of Art in London and was knighted in 1931. As well as Goya, among William’s publications were three fascinating volumes of memoirs. William’s sons carved out their own influential paths in the Arts. John (1901-92) his eldest, became director of the Tate Gallery (1938-1964), wrote Modern British Painters (1956) and was knighted in 1952. Michael (1908-1993) became a highly accomplished painter and print maker. SIR WILLIAM ROTHENSTEIN (BRITISH 1872-1945) THE CHURCH OF ST GERY, HAVRINCOURT titled Havrincourt Church lower left and numbered 29 lower right oil pastel over pencil on paper 52 x 36cm; 20 1/2 x 14 1/4in 85.5 x 63.5cm; 33 3/4 x 25in (framed) Havrincourt was on the battle front during the First World War. By November 1917 the German ‘Hindenburg Line’ crossed through it, and the village was part of the opening phase of the Battle of Cambrai at the end of the month. The second battle at Havrincourt opened in mid-September 1918, and marked the beginning of the German retreat back to the Belgian-French border. The vast majority of the village was destroyed in the conflict, but much was rebuilt following the Armistice, including the church of St Géry. Rothenstein worked alongside Eric Kennington (1888-1960) as a War Artist, recording in his memoires how 'We worked at Cambrai, Bourlon, Moeuvres, Havrincourt, Lesquières - everywhere the fantastic shapes and colours of ruined houses and shell-shocked trees provided a constant stimulus... No work has ever satisfied me so completely as that which I undertook while acting as a British, and later, as a Canadian, Official Artist. (William Rothenstein, Men and Memories, London, 1932, vol. II, p. 361).

SIR WILLIAM ROTHENSTEIN (BRITISH 1872-1945) BOMB DAMAGE TO THE SQUARE AND CATHEDRAL, PERONNE, THE SOMME oil on canvas 76.5 101cm; 30 x 40in (unframed) Exhibited (probably), Sheffied, Mappin Art Gallery, On the Péronne Front, Paintings & Drawings by William Rothenstein, 1918 Painted circa 1917-18. Rothenstein travelled to the Western Front as an Official War Artist in November 1917. Soon after his arrival he visited Péronne in the valley of the Somme. Of his impressions of the town he wrote: 'The unwonted shapes of the ruined buildings, the pink flush of the red bricks, deepening to blood colour where the impact of a shell had made a wound in the walls, made a scene more tragic than any stage-setting.' (William Rothenstein, Men and Memories, London, 1932, p. 326). An exhibition of paintings and drawings of his work at the Front was held at the Mappin Art Gallery, Sheffield University during June 1918, where the present oil was very likely exhibited. The subject in reverse was also reproduced as plate 4 in the set of twelve drypoints Rothenstein published in 1922 under the title Landscapes of the War. There is a painting of haystacks on the reverse of the present canvas.

Presenting himself chorister-like with mouth wide open, Rothenstein's identity is clear, but less so that of the smiling parson beneath him, although it has been suggested that it could be a double self-portrait as Whistler's nickname for Rothenstein was the parson due to his tendency to seriousness.

The inscription on this sketch of the Australian caricaturist Phil May (1864-1903) is a typical jeu de mot by Rothenstein - a play on the words 'me when I'm old', but it could equally have been added by May himself. May was the leading cartoonist of his day and is depicted by Rothenstein with his distinctive fringe. The two artists briefly shared a studio on the Rue Ravignan in Montmartre.

SIR WILLIAM ROTHENSTEIN (BRITISH 1872-1945) Sir William Rothenstein (lots 1-13) and Albert Rutherston (lots 14-23) Introduction Raised in Bradford as two of six children of Jewish immigrants, William and Albert both achieved considerable influence at the very heart of the British art establishment. Amongst their many and remarkable strengths they were painters, printmakers, illustrators, teachers, administrators, gallerists and, in William’s case, an accomplished and prolific writer. William was the first to move south to study under Alphonse Legros at the Slade (1888-89) before attending the Académie Julian in Paris (1889-1893) (lots 1-8), where he was encouraged by Whistler, Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec and befriended Rodin. (lots 9 & 10). In 1911 he collaborated with Roger Fry on large scale murals for Borough Polytechnic (lot 20) and worked on a number of designs for the ballet and theatre (lots 14-16). During 1917-18 he spent six months as an official War artist at the Front (lot 12), and was briefly visiting Professor of Civic Art at Sheffield University. Michael (1908-1993) became a highly accomplished painter and print maker (lots 24-30). SIR WILLIAM ROTHENSTEIN (BRITISH 1872-1945) PROFILE OF PAUL GERVAIS inscribed P Gervais lower right charcoal with white chalk 36.5 x 23cm; 14 1/4 x 9in 41.5 x 34cm; 16 1/4 x 13 1/4in (framed) Executed in Paris circa 1890. The painter Paul Gervais (1859-1944) was a teacher at the Académie Julian where Rothenstein studied from 1889-1893. A pupil of Jean Léon Gérôme, Gervais was known, and occasionally rebuked, for his depictions of sensuous nudes. Prominent commissions included Les Graces Florentines for La Salle Blanche in the Casino de Monte-Carlo and the Salle Empire in the Hôtel de Paris, Monte-Carlo.

WILLIAM ROTHENSTEIN (BRITISH 1872 - 1945) THE CHURCH OF SAINT-SEINE-L'ABBAYE AT NIGHT initialled and dated W.R. 1906 lower right oil on canvas 75 x 54cm; 29 1/2 x 21 1/4in 99 x 79cm; 39 x 31 1/4in (framed) Property from the Artist’s Family Provenance: (probably) Betty Holliday, the artist's daughter Victor Hugo-esque in its towering, empty, brooding form, Rothenstein's theatrical moonlit depiction of the west front of the church at Saint-Seine-L'Abbaye, a former Benedictine monastery, is wonderfully evocative of the pre-War era and reminiscent of the style of some of his closest friends and contemporaries, including the richly laden imagery of Walter Sickert, William Nicholson and James Pryde. Rothenstein first visited France aged 17, and returned regularly thereafter, including studying for four years in Paris at the Académie Julian. His frequent painting holidays there were often in the company of his younger brother Albert (lot 40), when they explored the French countryside, often by bicycle.

They had four children, including John who became Director of the Tate Gallery from 1938 to 1964, and Michael who became a talented print maker). Lucy Rothenstein (the artist's grand-daughter, by descent from the above) Sale, Sotheby's London, 26 February 2003, lot 27 Purchased at the above sale by the present owner Exhibited: London, Tate Gallery, William Rothenstein Memorial Exhibition, 1950, no. 2 (as An old lady) Bradford, City Art Gallery & Museums, 1972, no. 2 (illustrated in the catalogue) It has been suggested that inspiration for the present painting was a character in a Balzac novel, and may have been painted in Moret-Sur-Loing, where Rothenstein spent time in the summer of 1893. Rothenstein describes how 'a model came down to sit for him. He had bought some old dresses of an earlier period... and made her deck out in these for some paintings' (Robert Speaight, William Rothenstein: The Portrait of an Artist in his Time, London, 1962, p. 52). The dark tonality of the painting reflects his interest in Spanish painting and Goya in particular, an artist on whom he published a monograph in 1899; the poster, top right in the canvas, appears either to be a playbill or a contemporary fashion plate. A naturally gifted painter, Rothenstein had a keen eye for capturing the essence of his subject's character. He studied first at the Slade School of Art, where he was taught by Alphonse Legros, and then at the Académie Julian in Paris where he lived for four years from 1889-93. In Paris he quickly befriended a coterie of leading artists and writers of the day, among them Whistler, Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec and Pissarro, made the acquaintance of Rodin, and shared a studio with Charles Conder in Montmartre. On his return to England Rothenstein worked on his series Oxford Characters, featuring more than twenty portraits of figures associated with Oxford, including his friend the writer and caricaturist Max Beerbohm. He went on to have a glittering career as both an artist and writer. He was knighted in 1931 for his services to art.
