      Est: $5,600 - $8,400

Portrait of Isaac Brodeau, three-quarter-length, seated, in a green coat and waistcoat, reading a book signed 'G.ROTH' (lower right) oil on canvas 36 x 28 in. (91.5 x 71.2 cm.) ENGRAVED G. Roth, mezzotint. LITERATURE A. Oliver, 'A Drapery Painter of the 18th Century', Country Life, 15 August, 1963, p. 371. EXHIBITION London, Society of Artists, 1768, no. 138, as by William Roth. NOTES George Roth, who Oliver ( op.cit. ) believed was the same as the artist recorded as William Roth, was primarily a drapery painter used by, among others, Hudson and Ramsay. The sitter in this portrait is thought to have been either the keeper of a coffee house in Oxford, or a silversmith.
