Ernest Roth Germany / New York, (1879-1964) Pont Neuf, Paris, 1914 etching on fine paper Signed and titled in the plate; signed and dated in pencil along lower edge outside of plate. Biography from Williams American Art Galleries: Ernest David Roth was born on 17 January 1879 in Stuttgart, Germany. A few years later, he and his family moved to America. Because it was necessary for him to work during the day, Roth enrolled in night classes at the National Academy of Design. He began studying etching under the renowned James D. Smillie who produced etchings and illustrations for many publications. Roth first exhibited in New York and Philadelphia. However, he was financially unsuccessful and did not receive the recognition he desired. As a result, he left for Europe where he concentrated exclusively on etching. While in Florence, he created a series of etchings that immortalized the spirit of Florence. The director of the Uffizi Gallery was so impressed by Roth's work that he purchased the etchings for the Uffizi print department. Upon Roth's return to the United States, he exhibited frequently throughout the country and won numerous awards, including First prize for Architectural Subject from the Chicago Society of Etchers and the J. Sanford Saltus Prize from the Salmagundi Club. Clearly, as one critic noted, "Mr. Roth's work has been welcomed in America as promising well for the future of the art." His work remains in countless collections across the country. Besides housing examples of Roth's work, Silvermine College of Art has his printing press from which he produced countless etchings. Ernest David Roth died in 1964.

He studied painting at the National Academy of Design and the New York School of Art, achieving American citizenship in 1905. After his first solo show in 1914 in New York, his etchings found their way into the Uffizi in Florence as well as the Panama Pacific International Exhibition, where he won the silver medal. After World War I he traveled to Spain, France, and Italy, capturing the rapidly changing styles in Western architecture and city design with his etchings. His work is still seen in permanent collections at Carnegie Museum, the Library of Congress, and in countless museums in Europe Following World War II, he stayed in Manhattan until health issues caused him to seek quieter refuge in West Redding, Connecticut. He died on August 20th, 1964 while visiting friends in Cambridge, New York.

Original Ernest D. Roth Painting "The Country"

    Est: $500 - $800

For your consideration is an original framed painting done by Ernest David Roth (1879-1964) titled, "The Country". In Stuttgart, Germany, on January 17, 1879, Ernest David Roth was born. He and his family relocated to America a short time later. Roth registered for night classes at the National Academy of Design because he had to work during the day, and under the guidance of the respected James D. Smillie, who created etchings and illustrations for numerous publications, he started his etching studies. Philadelphia and New York hosted Roth's first exhibitions, but he did not, however, achieve financial success or the notoriety for which he had hoped. As a result, he traveled to Europe and focused solely on etching. He produced a number of etchings while he was in Florence that captured the essence of the city. The etchings were bought by the director of the Uffizi Gallery for the Uffizi print department because he was so moved by Roth's art. Numerous collections can still be found his work all over the nation. Silvermine College of Art not only has examples of Roth's work but also his printing press which he used to create countless etchings. In 1964, Ernest David Roth passed away. The painting shows a nice country scene with a house on the left hand side, a wagon on the side of the road in the middle, and a small shack on the right hand side. Trees are scattered across the background, set against a blue sky. The painting shows vivid colors of blue, green, yellow, purple and orange. No signature is present while in the frame. The back of the frame reads, "Roth, Ernest The Country". The painting shows good condition overall with no signs of obvious damage present. The visible painting measures 25 1/2"L x 23 1/4" W, while the entire piece measures 28 1/8"L x 25 7/8"W.*
