          Est: $200 - $300

Sight: 10 x 12 1/2 in. #2571 .  Ernest David Roth was born on January 17th, 1879 in Stuttgart, Germany, and at the age of five his parents immigrated to the United States. As a boy he worked in a print shop in New York City, which sparked an early interest in art. He studied painting at the National Academy of Design and the New York School of Art, achieving American citizenship in 1905. From then until 1907 he traveled abroad, particularly spending time making paintings and etching in Venice, Italy. Over the next ten years he divided his time between the United States, France, and Italy, inexorably drawn back to the canals and ancient structures along the waterways in Venice. After his first solo show in 1914 in New York, his etchings found their way into the Uffizi in Florence as well as the Panama Pacific International Exhibition, where he won the silver medal. After World War I he traveled to Spain, France, and Italy, capturing the rapidly changing styles in Western architecture and city design with his etchings. His work is still seen in permanent collections at Carnegie Museum, the Library of Congress, and in countless museums in Europe Following World War II, he stayed in Manhattan until health issues caused him to seek quieter refuge in West Redding, Connecticut. He died on August 20th, 1964 while visiting friends in Cambridge, New York.

          Est: $500 - $800

For your consideration is an original framed painting done by Ernest David Roth (1879-1964) titled, "The Country". In Stuttgart, Germany, on January 17, 1879, Ernest David Roth was born. He and his family relocated to America a short time later. Roth registered for night classes at the National Academy of Design because he had to work during the day, and under the guidance of the respected James D. Smillie, who created etchings and illustrations for numerous publications, he started his etching studies. Philadelphia and New York hosted Roth's first exhibitions, but he did not, however, achieve financial success or the notoriety for which he had hoped. As a result, he traveled to Europe and focused solely on etching. He produced a number of etchings while he was in Florence that captured the essence of the city. The etchings were bought by the director of the Uffizi Gallery for the Uffizi print department because he was so moved by Roth's art. Numerous collections can still be found his work all over the nation. Silvermine College of Art not only has examples of Roth's work but also his printing press which he used to create countless etchings. In 1964, Ernest David Roth passed away. The painting shows a nice country scene with a house on the left hand side, a wagon on the side of the road in the middle, and a small shack on the right hand side. Trees are scattered across the background, set against a blue sky. The painting shows vivid colors of blue, green, yellow, purple and orange. No signature is present while in the frame. The back of the frame reads, "Roth, Ernest The Country". The painting shows good condition overall with no signs of obvious damage present. The visible painting measures 25 1/2"L x 23 1/4" W, while the entire piece measures 28 1/8"L x 25 7/8"W.*
