Ernest Christian Rost Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1866 - d. 1940

Born in Mt. Vernon, NY, after the Civil War, artist Ernest Christian Rost was a successful 19th and 20th century painter, etcher, and photographer. By his late teens, several of Ernest Christian Rost's paintings, in the form of oil landscapes, were on display at the National Academy of Design. However, by the 1890s he shifted completely to etching as his primary artwork focus. Many of his etchings created between 1891 and 1896 are held at the Library of Congress.

Most of Rost's landscape paintings for sale depicted rural landscapes throughout New York, but they also featured people, animals, and homes of notable individuals of the era. Following the start of the Spanish-American War, artist Ernest Christian Rost was sent to Panama, Puerto Rico, and several other countries to photograph the events for the U.S. War Department.         Late 19th, early 20th c. etching of a country lane and village in New York State, pencil-signed by the artist Ernest Christian Rost (1866-1940). Remarque of a stone bridge in the lower margin. In Frame easures 31"x17"x1". Weight 7 pds. Ernest Christian Roth was born January 20, 1866, at Mt. Vernon, N.Y. and was the son of Christan Rost (a locally known engraver) and Minna M. Rost. Nothing is known of his childhood except he was the fourth of six children in the family. By the mid-1880’s E.C. Rost was exhibiting landscapes in oil at the National Academy of Design, New York City. After 1887 his oil painting stopped and by 1891 etching became his primary occupation. Today, the Library of Congress (Prints and Photographs Division) maintains 63 etchings signed ‘Ernest C. Rost’ or ‘E. C. Rost’, with dates running from 1891 to 1896. These often portray country lanes, cottages, rural scenes, sea, river and bayside settings, mostly in New York State. With the outbreak of the Spainish-American War, Rost was sent by the U.S. War Department to Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Phillippines, and Guam as a civilian photographer of military operations and installations. Today, 21 photographs taken by E. C. Rost of these islands are held by the National Archives

        ROST, ERNEST CHRISTIAN (1866-1940, AMERICAN) A late 19th C. oil on canvas depicting an extensive upstate New York autumn landscape. Signed lower right E.C. Rost. This is the only few Rost oil paintings of the early period available today. The impressionistic technique utilizes broad brush strokes of thickly applied paint. Noteworthy is how this technique contrasts with that of the extremely detailed representational style of his etchings. Rost did landscapes in oils during the 1880's. His works were shown at the National Academy of Design in New York City and also in Arkville, NY- until a fire destroyed that studio and much of his earliest work. 31 x 45.25"
