Study of two seated figures, possibly after Antonio Canova's Socrates reliefs, graphite on laid paper without watermark, inscribed with attributions to Canova in ink wash in the upper right, and lower left corners, gold tape fixing the sheet onto Rossi's distinctive blue-coloured mount, 195 x 135 mm (7 3/4 x 5 1/4 in), minor spotting and browning, unframed, [19th century] Provenance: Unidentified mark, probably Egisto Rossi [L. 632]; Johann Georg, Herzog von Saxen (1869-1938) [L. 4483] ⁂ For a discussion of Rossi as forger, notably as a forger of Canova drawings, see Roberta J.M.
