Alessandro Rosi, Hagar and the Angel

      Est: €50,000 - €70,000

The present canvas displays the most relevant and distinctive elements in Rosi´s œuvre: the vibrant palette and the richness of the details, the virtuoso brushwork and the highly skilled draughtsmanship. The composition, pushed onto the foreground and counterpointed by the repoussoir figure on the left, is typical for the artist, and can be compared to other works by the painter executed in the 1650s, when the same model appears rather frequently. The figure of Agar relates in her posture to examples by Cesare Dandini, by whom Rosi solved his apprenticeship and by whom the latter was strongly influenced, especially in the first part of his career. An eclectic painter, remembered by the historic sources for his flamboyant personality («Pittore di modi [...] negromantici», as Roberto Longhi described him), Rosi found great appreciation amongst some of the major Florentine patrons of the time, such as the Corsini and Rinuccini; Cosimo III also commissioned him a series of tapestries. The painter gained a considerable fortune in his days, but in modern times his work was often confused with that of Sigismondo Coccapani, a Florentine contemporary who worked in a comparable style.

      PITTORE FIORENTINO DEL XVII SECOLO

      Est: €1,000 - €2,000

      ALESSANDRO ROSI - Mary Magdalene

      Est: €30,000 - €32,000

ALESSANDRO ROSI (Florence, 1627-1697) Mary Magdalene Oil on canvas, 144 x 89.5 cm The work in question is attributed to Alessandro Rosi, a Florentine painter, Cesare Dandini’s student. He worked for the Medici court and many of his works are preserved in the Galleria Corsini. It depicts Mary Magdalene sitting on a rock with a wooden crucifix in hand and surrounded by angels. The color of the drapery, lying in order to create subtle chiaroscuro effects, gives plasticity to the figure.

A Female Saint with a putto oil on canvas 251/4 x 19 7/8 in. (64 x 50.5 cm.) PROVENANCE Mrs. Price, Sainfield House, Co. Down and Ringdufferin, and by descent to the present owner. NOTES This picture can be dated to the early activity of Alessandro Rosi, when the artist's work still showed the influence of his master, Cesare Dandini. Characteristic of this period are the bright colours and the pellucid skin painted smoothly over a dark ground. The picture can be compared with the Self Portrait in the Uffizi and a Portrait of a Gentleman dated 1646 (Stiozzi Ridolfi collection, Florence). Later in his career, Rosi's pictures showed a more rapid, abbreviated style comparable to that of Cesare's brother, Pier Dandini. Examples of this are The Madonna of the Rosary and he Martyrdom of Saint Christine, both in the Abbey of Passignano, Val di Pesa. His bright, vivid style is recognisable in the work of his pupil Alessandro Gherardini. We are grateful to Dr. Francesca Baldassari for the attribution, given after examining the picture in the original. She describes the work as a 'capolavoro' of the artist. We are also grateful to Dr. Sandro Bellesi who attributed the picture to the artist on the basis of a photograph.
