ODIN ROSENVINGE (1880-1957) CUNARD LINE / FASTEST OCEAN SERVICE IN THE WORLD. Circa 1920s. 39 1/2x24 1/4 inches, 100 1/4x61 1/2 cm. Turner & Dunnett Ltd., Liverpool. Condition B+ / A-: small replaced losses in corners; repaired tears, creases and minor restoration in margins. The Cunard Line had three 4-funnel ships; the Lusitania and her sister Mauretania launched within 9 weeks of each other in 1907; and the Aquitania followed seven years later. The Lusitania was sunk by German torpedoes on May 7, 1915 (an event which helped precipitate the United States' entry in World War I). After the war, as reparations from the German government for the sinking of the Lusitania, the Cunard Line was given the SS Imperator, which was renamed RMS Berengaria in 1921.

ODIN ROSENVINGE (1880-1957). CUNARD - LINE / EUROPE AMERICA / [AQUITANIA]. 1914. 39¾x25 inches, 101x63½ cm. Turner & Dunnett, Liverpoo

        Est: $4,000 - $6,000

ODIN ROSENVINGE (1880-1957) CUNARD - LINE / EUROPE AMERICA / [AQUITANIA]. 1914. 39 3/4x25 inches, 101x63 1/2 cm. Turner & Dunnett, Liverpool. Condition B+: repaired tears, small replaced losses and restoration in margins; creases and restoration in image. The Aquitania was the last of the four-funneled ocean liners. She took her maiden voyage in May of 1914. Although closely resembling Cunard's Lusitania and Mauretania, the Aquitania was not officially a sister ship to the other two. Whereas the first two were built for speed, the Aquitania was designed to help the Cunard line rival the White Star Line for luxury. This poster is from a very short period after the ship was launched in May until August of the same year, when she was requisitioned by the British government to be used in the First World War. During her less than 70 days in civilian service, she made the transatlantic run between Britain and New York three times. One of two variants. Weallans p. 60.

Condition B: tears, losses and staining in margins and image; creases along horizontal folds; tape on verso. Paper. The Union-Castle Line, operating between Europe and Africa, was formed by the merger of the Union Line and the Castle Shipping Line. Most of their ships contained the suffix "Castle" in their names. Although the name of this ship is indistinct, it appears to be the Carnarvon Castle, which was launched in 1926.

        Est: $2,000 - $3,000

ODIN ROSENVINGE (1880-1957) ARGENTINA (SUNNY SOUTH) AND BRAZIL. Circa 1910. 33 1/4x20 inches, 84 1/2x50 3/4 cm. Turner & Dunnett, Liverpool. Condition A. Rosenvinge was a prolific designer of posters for various shipping companies, including the Royal Line, Anchor Donaldson Line, Allan Line, Elder Dempster Line, Orient Line and the Union Castle Line (see lot 25), but his largest client was Cunard Line. His connection to the maritime world came through his primary employer in the shipping center of Liverpool, the printer Turner and Dunnett. He was also a prolific designer of maritime and liner postcards. Advertising here, the Nelson Line was founded in 1880 and began carrying passengers in 1910, a decision which was quickly followed by its merger with Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. in 1913. Here, the artist delivers one of his most allegorical images, advertising sailings to the River Plate in Argentina. With the Basilica of Notre Dame de Boulogne in the gray foreground, a vessel heads toward a woman pulling aside a gossamer curtain to reveal a warm and sunny South American vista. This is the German version.

ODIN ROSENVINGE (1880-1957) FRANCONIA FROM MONACO / CUNARD LINE. 1932. 39 3/4x24 1/4 inches, 101x61 1/2 cm. Condition A: minor restoration at edges. As there were several ships named Franconia, and Rosenvinge illustrates only an exotic destination and not the vessel itself, it is initially difficult to determine if this poster is advertising a trip around the world on the first Franconia (which was torpedoed and sunk in 1916), or on the second Franconia which sailed for Cunard from 1922-1956. However, a brochure "Around the World in the Franconia" from 1932, lists arrival in Monaco on January 21st and departure on the 23rd, making the latter Franconia the subject here. This wonderfully-colored image impresses the viewer as much with its technical skill as it does with the exotic nature of the landscape. A variation exists with text at bottom advertising "Winter Cruises." rare/span.

Condition B+ / A-: minor restored losses in corners and margins; minor repaired tears and restoration in margins and along vertical and horizontal folds. A scarce/span and beautiful poster advertising transatlantic travel on the legendary Lusitania. Although the ship's name does not appear on the bow of the vessel illustrated, we know it is the Lusitania both by her profile (with her signature four smokestacks) and, more importantly, the white stripe along the top edge of her bow. Her sister ship the Mauretania, which looked practically identical, did not have the band of white above the black hull. This poster, however, predates the Lusitania's maiden voyage (September 7, 1907), as she was never in regular service with this white strip in place; the top of her bow was only painted white for her trials. This poster is exceptional, not only as one of a very few posters for the Lusitania, but also as a wonderful, artistic and evocative nocturnal seascape, in which a searchlight dramatically slices diagonally through the sky, prominently intersecting the diagonal hull of the ship. A fast and elegant ship, the vessel entered into popular culture and immortality when she was sunk by German torpedoes on May 7, 1915, a horrific event which helped precipitate the United States' entry in World War I.
