Joe Rosenthal (1911-2006) Joe Rosenthal (1911-2006) RAISING THE FLAG AT IWO JIMA, 1945. Selenium-toned silver gelatin print on fibre-based paper, printed c.1980, image size 212 x 163mm, sheet size 252 x 202mm, signed by the photographer in pencil on verso. Provenance: Philip Adam Collection Years after Joe Rosenthal made his famous photograph Raising the Flat at Iwo Jima, 1945, he became a staff photographer at the San Francisco Chronicle. Philip Adam met Joe Rosenthal in the Photography Department at the Chronicle's main offices at 901 Mission Street. Shortly after they met, having learned of Adam's printing abilities, Rosenthal asked Adam to make a print of his iconic image of the Flag Raising at Iwo Jima, using his original 4 X 5 negative. Rosenthal had given the picture to veterans over the course of his life, signing them with a ball point pen on the front. The present print is made on fibre-based paper and selenium toned, and is one of the few archival-grade prints that exist from Rosenthal's negative, c.1970-1980s.

JOE ROSENTHAL (1911-2006) Raising of the Flag at Iwo Jima. Silver print, the image measuring 4 1/8x3 1/8 inches (10.5x7.9 cm.), the sheet slightly larger, with Rosenthal's signature in pencil and the notation "1st Print G.T.," also in pencil, on verso. 1945 This print is claimed by the technician who printed it to be the very first print of this image, made on shipboard in Guam. Following the flag raising, Rosenthal sent his film to Guam to be developed and printed. George Tjaden of Hendricks, Minnesota, was likely the technician who printed it, according to a 2005 interview he gave to journalist Steve Hemmingsen. Upon seeing the photo, Associated Press photography editor John Bodkin exclaimed "Here's one for all time!" and immediately transmitted the image to the AP headquarters in New York City. The photograph was quickly picked up off the wire by hundreds of newspapers, distributed within less than 24 hours after Rosenthal shot it. This example, printed on Guam, was signed by Rosenthal for Laurence Bershad, who served as a radar officer on the U.S.S. New Jersey during World War II, and was later in charge of photography for the Bikini Atoll nuclear tests. Bershad's collection of historic World War II photographs (including another example of this image) is now at the Hoover Institute.

JOE ROSENTHAL Photographer Signed Iwo Jima Flag Raising Famous Photograph

          Est: $1,600 - $1,800

Autographs The Most Famous Military Photograph Signed by Its Photographer "Joe Rosenthal" Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima JOSEPH JOHN "JOE" ROSENTHAL (1911-2006). Joe Rosenthal was an American Photographer who received the Pulitzer Prize for his iconic World War II Photograph Raising the American Flag atop Mount Suribachi, on Iwo Jima, taken during the 1945 Battle of Iwo Jima. Historic Oversized Signed Photograph of the famous later reproduction image Signed, "Joe Rosenthal, Mt. Suribachi, Feb 23, 1945" (at some later date), in black felt tip pen, measuring a huge 12.75" x 10" being mounted and framed under UV Plexiglas to an huge overall size of 15.25" x 12.5", Choice Crisp Mint. The stated date refers to the day the original photo was taken. This is perhaps one of the most famous military photographs ever taken, here signed by the Photographer himself. Joe Rosenthal took the original famous photograph on February 23, 1945 of five US Marines and one US Navy corpsman raising a United States flag atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. Originally rejected as a photographer for the Army due to poor eyesight, Rosenthal would go on to join the Associated Press and follow the Marines in the Pacific Theater of Operations during the war. That photo won him the 1945 Pulitzer Prize for best photo; the only photograph to win in the same year it was taken. In April 2022 a similar exact oversized Signed Photograph sold for $2,470 in an East coast auction. Provenance Ex: Alexander Gaston Collection. Charles W. Lindberg (June 26, 1920 - June 24, 2007) was a United States Marine Corps corporal who fought in three island campaigns during World War II. During the Battle of Iwo Jima, he was a member of the patrol that captured the top of Mount Suribachi where he helped raise the first U.S. flag on the island on February 23, 1945. Six days later, he was wounded in action. The first flag flown over the southern end of Iwo Jima was regarded to be too small to be seen by the thousands of Marines fighting on the other side of the mountain where the Japanese airfields and most of their troops were located, so it was replaced the same day with a larger flag. Although there were photographs taken of the first flag flying on Mount Suribachi and some which include Lindberg, there is no photograph of Marines raising the first flag. The second flag-raising was photographed by Associated Press combat photographer Joe Rosenthal and became famous after copies of his photograph appeared in the newspapers two days later. Lindberg spent decades trying to bring awareness of the first flag raising and his participation in it. The Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia, is modeled after the historic photograph of six Marines raising the second flag on Iwo Jima.

Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima, 1945 Gelatin silver print, printed in 1984 21,6 x 16,6 cm Signed by the photographer in ink on the reverse PROVENANCE acquired in 1985 from the Andrew Smith Gallery, Sante Fe by the grandparent of current owner For the United States of America, Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima has become a symbol of eternal victory. On February 19, 1945, US Marines landed on the Pacific island of Iwo Jima, a Japanese military fortification at the time. Four days later, Rosenthal, who had been dispatched by the Associated Press to cover the Marines’ operations in the Pacific, noticed on his daily reconnaissance that a group of soldiers had gone to hoist the American stars and stripes atop Mount Suribachi. He followed them but came too late. A second group of Marines was about to hoist a second, much larger flag attached to a long steel pipe. 34-year-old Joe Rosenthal took his Speed Graphic and created one of the most famous war photographs of all time. A few hours later, the photo was developed and cabled to the AP’soffices in New York. Seventeen hours later, it was on the covers of many newspapers. The photograph instantly became an icon and won the Pulitzer Prize the same year. In contrast to most other existing versions of this picture, the print presented here is not a wire press photo, but an signed print from the original negative.
