Christian Emil Rosenstand, "Italienisches Seebad- Idyll", Mischtechnik von 1896 Christian Emil Rosenstand, 1859 Ausumgaard/ Dänemark - 1932 Dresden, dänisch-deutscher Genre- und Landschaftsmaler, hier: Mutter, Vater und ihr kleiner Sohn in altertümlicher Badekleidung beim Spielen im Mittelmeer, Aquarell/ Deckfarben auf festem Karton, 48 x 33,5 cm, l. u. sign. u. dat. (18)96, in alter Schrift handschriftl. bez. "Italienisches Seebad- Idyll" und "Italiener". Zum Künstler: Christian Emil Rosenstand studierte ab 1875 an der Kunstakademie in Kopenhagen und kam in jungen Jahren in das neu gegründete Deutsche Reich, wo er über 40 Jahre gelebt hat. Nach längerem Aufenthalt in Berlin siedelte er nach Heidelberg und schließlich nach Baden-Baden über. Von 1891 bis 1895 lebte er krankheitsbedingt in Italien. Hier schuf er eine Reihe von Illustrationen und Aquarellen wie die hier vorliegende Arbeit. Er war zunächst freier Mitarbeiter der Fliegenden Blätter und anderer deutscher Zeitschriften, darunter Daheim und die Leipziger Illustrierte Zeitung. Nach Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges zog er von Baden-Baden in die sächsische Landeshauptstadt Dresden. Neben Landschaftsbildern waren genrehafte Darstellungen, Gesellschafts- sowie Kaffeehausszenen seine Hauptmotive. (18)96, inscribed "Italienisches Seebad- Idyll" and "Italiener" in old handwriting. About the artist: Christian Emil Rosenstand studied at the academy of arts in Copenhagen from 1875 and came to the newly founded German Reich at a young age, where he lived for over 40 years. After a lengthy stay in Berlin, he moved to Heidelberg and finally to Baden-Baden. From 1891 to 1895 he lived in Italy due to illness. Here he created a series of illustrations and watercolours such as the present work. He initially worked as a freelancer for the Fliegende Blätter and other German magazines, including Daheim and the Leipziger Illustrierte Zeitung. After the end of the First World War, he moved from Baden-Baden to Dresden, the capital of Saxony. In addition to landscapes, his main motifs were genre-like depictions, social scenes and coffee house scenes.

It shows a forest clearing in a park. Sunlight shines through the leafage of the trees onto a sculpture in the foreground. The sculpture consists of a women’s bust on a column. Behind the sculpture is a cenotaph of stone. The background shows trees with green leaves and the indication of another stone monument. The painting is signed and dated at the lower right with ‘E. Rosenstand, 95’. Optically in appealing condition, it shows under UV-light scattered touch-ups, especially in the margins and along a horizontal creasing mark above the center. The edges of the canvas show minimal color flaking. In places the surface is craqueled and rubbed. The canvas measures 67 x 40 cm.
