    Rosenberg, Samuel (Sam) (American/Pittsburgh, 1896-1972), Self Portrait with Pipe, 1921, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left, 26 x 19 inches, in a period carved gilt wood frame 32 x 25 inches. One of Rosenberg's earliest self-portraits, and one of very few of his paintings from before 1925 to appear at auction. In the 2003 monograph Samuel Rosenberg: Portrait of a Painter by Barbara Jones, the author discusses Rosenberg's early self-portraits on page 15. This one is described there as "a more mature, three-quarter-length Self Portrait, with pipe in his mouth, clean-shaven, and dressed in a suit, tie, and white shirt, an attire that would become his trademark." The painting is not pictured in the book, but it is included in the catalogue raisonne in the back.

    Rosenberg, Samuel (Sam) (American/Pittsburgh, 1896-1972), Procession, Mexico, 1942, oil on Masonite, 24 x 20 inches, signed and dated lower left and stamped with estate stamp on panel reverse, Provenance: Acquired from Libby Rosenberg, with the artist's gilded strip frame, 25.5 x 21.5 inches, Rosenberg may have visited Mexico in the 1930's or 1940's but was certainly acquainted with the Mexican Muralist Movement of which this painting is clearly influenced. Rosenberg was clearly thinking of the famous group. The Mexican Muralism movement emerged in the 1920s and was characterized by large-scale, public murals that depicted historical, social, and political themes. The three most prominent artists associated with this movement are Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and Jose Clemente Orozco. They, along with other muralists, aimed to create art accessible to the general public, often using powerful visual storytelling to communicate their messages.

    Samuel Rosenberg, American, 1896 to 1972, charcoal painting on paper depicting a portrait of a woman, 1912. Signed and dated lower right. Framed. Samuel Rosenberg was an American artist, known for Modernist, surreal urban views, portrait and abstract painting. Samuel Rosenberg's career as an artist and teacher spans nearly six decades. His style evolved during his career that can be described in four periods. From 1915 to 1930 Rosenberg mainly painted portraits. The artist turned to Pittsburghs urban landscape and American Scene paintings from 1930 to 1942. From 1942 to 1952, he experimented with allegory and abstraction, and finally from 1949 to 1972 during the period when the artist felt he had come into his own, he explored Abstract Expressionism. Throughout his career Rosenbergs art always emphasized the the importance of light. One of a kind artwork.
