Richard Rosenbaum Austrian/American, b. 1864 Central Park, NYC, 1892 Signed R. Rosenbaum, inscribed N.Y. and dated 11/1/1892 (ll) Oil on canvas 24 x 36 inches Provenance: Private collection This work depicts Richard Rosenbaum's imaginary conception of the Central Park Speedway, the creation of which was approved by the New York State legislature in March of 1892 but never constructed. While supporters of the track felt it would ease the growing congestion of the park's roadways, the public sentiment that the speedway would bring "desecration and ruin to the park" brought a quick repeal of the plan. Rosenbaum, who had studied in Vienna and specialized in oils and watercolors of horses and sporting scenes, created the painting a short time after the demise of the speedway's initiative. In the composition, a mounted policeman at the roadside, presumably there to control traffic, stands helplessly as the horses gallop at full speed spewing dust. Their drivers wear fixed expressions as they press their horses to move even faster. Thus the image suggests that the speedway's traffic and pace would, indeed, have disrupted a place intended as pastoral refuge from the grit and stress of the city. In recording this subject, Rosenbaum produced a significant historical record of this short chapter in New York life. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC
