Harry Roseland Art for Sale at Auction

Genre Painter, Landscape painter, b. 1867 - d. 1950

Artist Harry Roseland, born in New York to German immigrants in 1866, began his studies under various artists such as John Bernard Whittaker and James Carroll Beckwith, but was largely self-taught. Experimenting with figure paintings, still life, and landscapes, painter Harry Roseland eventually found his calling through realist paintings of African Americans in post-Civil War America. His work became very popular, and was often reproduced as lithographs and used by businesses and magazines.

Harry Roseland's African American paintings for sale show the interaction between different races, classes, and ages in the late 1800s and the first half of the 20th century. Wanting to tell stories and depict social scenes through his art, artist Harry Roseland abandoned sentimental and idealized work to depict everyday life that was often ignored by other painters at the time. Collectors interested in this important time in history can find many rare African American paintings online.
