      Mar. 07, 2011

Tracey Rose SOUTH AFRICAN 1974- Knockout signed

      Est: R4,000 - R6,000

Tracey Rose SOUTH AFRICAN 1974- Knockout signed and dated 00 in pencil gouache and Chinese pencil on paper 54 by 75cm Tracey Rose most famously produced the photograph The Kiss (2001), one of post-Apartheid South Africa's most iconic images. This work relates most closely to TKO, the complex DVD in which a naked woman, in an enclosed space, pummels a boxing bag in a way that accentuates both her vulnerability and her strength. TKO refers to a technical knockout, declared when a ?ghter cannot safely continue the match. Both The Kiss and TKO are in the Permanent Collection of Iziko South African National Gallery. Rose is fearless in her confrontation of the politics of identity, including sexual, racial, and gender-based themes. Her works have been included in Global Feminisms at The Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art in Brooklyn, New York (2007) and in Plateau de l'humanite in the 49th Venice Biennale curated by Harald Szeemann in 2001.
