§ Jasper Rose UCSC (British 1930-2019) The Cambridge Society of Painters and Sculptors oil on board 63 x 76cm Footnote: A celebrated artist, professor, and art historian, Jasper Rose is remembered as much for his professional accomplishments as he is for his immeasurable kindness and generosity. Born in 1930, Rose received his B.A. and his M.A. from King’s College, Cambridge, before moving to the United States, with his young family, in 1963. In 1965, Rose became a founding member of the University of California, Santa Cruz, though the family would often return during the summer months to their home in Cambridge. Like painted in the mid-1950s, the present lot depicts members of The Cambridge Society of Painters and Sculptors, which was officially established in 1955. Founding members of the Society depicted in Rose’s work include a bearded Cecil Collins, standing beside his wife, Elizabeth, Nan Youngman, shown wearing a blazer and with short, brown hair on the right of the image, beside her, Betty Marion Rea, and Lady Taylor and Elisabeth Vellacott on the left-hand side.
