Giulio Rosati Sold at Auction Prices

Orientmaler, Painter

(b. 1858, Rome, Italy; d. 1917) Italian painter. Giulio Rosati studied painting at the Academy of Rome. Working mainly in watercolor, and sometimes in oil, Rosati focused nearly his entire painting career on Orientalist art, and was part of a large group of painters at the time, who were depicting similar Middle Eastern subjects. This was a time of greater accessibility to the Middle East, and even though Rosati himself never went, he was able to create his images using photographs, literature, engravings, Oriental carpets, clothes, and objects brought back from travelers. Orientalist painting became increasingly popular among American and British collectors toward the end of the 18th century as souvenirs of their exotic travels.

GIULIO ROSATI (Rome, 1858 - Rome, 1917) "A game of backgammon", 1906. Watercolor on thick paper glued to cardboard. Period frame with fruit marquetry, ivory and ebony. Signed and dated in the lower right corner.

          Est: €40,000 - €50,000

GIULIO ROSATI (Rome, 1858 - Rome, 1917) "A game of backgammon", 1906. Watercolor on thick paper glued to cardboard. Period frame with fruit marquetry, ivory and ebony. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measures: 36 x 53 cm; 54 x 70 cm (frame). Giulio Rosati was an important watercolorist of orientalist theme. Fascinated by the Maghrebi customs, he captured them in magnificent scenes: carpet sellers, harem dancers.... In this case it is an intimate scene, without exotic stridency, because with a few elements we are immersed in that time and that space that so amazed the painter. Two Moroccan men are concentrating on the game, their eyes on the backgammon board, arranged on a carpet knotted in wool. This, together with the equally colorful tapestry that decorates the wall and the checkerboard floor, are the only elements that describe the room, because Giulio Romano wanted us to focus our attention on the characters. Dressed in traditional attire, that is, with loose-fitting djellabas, wearing slippers and turbaned headdresses, the iridescent whiteness of the garments contrasts with the sun-bleached faces. The angular features are framed by bushy beards, and the gnarled-fingered hands reveal their advanced age. Newspaper papers are scattered around him. Giulio Rosati was an academically trained painter, noted for his orientalist genre work. Rosati studied drawing and painting in Rome, at the Accademia di S. Luca from 1875, and had as teachers the academicians Dario Querci and Francesco Podesti, and the Spanish painter Luis Alvarez Catalá. Orientalism, as a choice of subjects and pictorial taste, soon became his favorite subject, in particular places and personalities of the Maghreb, of which he painted very colorful characters, wrapped in stories of adventure. He never traveled to the places he painted, and his documentation, therefore, did not come from direct experience, but from photographs or objects that could be found in those years in Rome, where he lived. Rosati painted in oil, but much more frequently and effectively he painted in watercolor, a technique he mastered. He was one of the most prolific orientalist painters of the period at the turn of the 19th-20th century.

Giulio Rosati (Italy, 1858 - 1917) Italian Orientalist, Academic Classicists Painter Studied at the Accademia di San Luca under Dario Querci and Francesco Podesti. Stylistically influenced by the following painters - Paul Delaroche, Franz Xavier Winterhalter and Thomas Couture The Orientalist Style Giulio Rosati paintings show a love for the colors and exoticism of the Orient. He was a genre painters well as a figure painter. Rosati depicted exotic woman lounging about on silk cushions waiting for their sultan to summon them to the love chamber. Despite the authenticity which Rosati painted his harem girls, Persian rugs and Moorish architecture, the painter rarely left his drab studio. He found inspiration in stories, photographs, etchings, Arabic trinkets and his own imaginative fantasies. His seated Arab figures dressed in robes and sporting turbans suggest an exotic Arabic setting. Like other Orientalist painters he romanticized the East. Description of the Academic Classicism Painting style Followers of this movement were influenced by the high standards of the French Academie des Beaux-Arts, which practiced under the movements of Neoclassicism* and Romanticism*. Academic Classicism attempted to merge both techniques to create the perfect style. It is characterized by adhering to a strict manner of painting, following narrow compositional rules and delicacy of color. The atmospheric effects are sumptuously luminescent. According to art historian, Walter Pater: "To produce such effects at all requires all the resources of painting, with its power of indirect expression, of subordinate but significant detail, its atmosphere, its foregrounds and backgrounds."
