Diatto.

Although technically founded in 1835, it wasn't until 1905 that the Italian car maker Diatto made its first automobile. Up until then, it had specialized in horse-drawn carriages and luxury sleeper cars on trains. By 1909, it had become an internationally-recognized brand, here being spotted by a contemporary Galileo as the newest meteor.

H. L. ROOWY PNEU VÉLO MICHELIN / DESHAIES. 1912. 45 1/8x29 3/4 inches. Chaix, Paris. Condition B+: discoloration and repaired tear in top margin; restoration along vertical and horizontal folds. Matted and framed. Several variations of this poster exist, including the more common version with the artist's name printed in red.

Roowy's vision of the carefree Michelin Man enjoying a smoke and clearly in a giving mood, as he flings the segmented tire-rings of his midsection out towards the viewer in this promotion for the bicycle tire and one of its distributors. The laws of physics, not to mention established health standards, clearly don't apply to the bisected Bibendum, but the rules of sound economics certainly do, as the top text brightly announces in standard Michelin fashion that their tires are 'the best and the cheapest.'
