Im Vordergrund ein Tierschädel als memento mori, Öl/Lw., doubliert, 80 x 125 cm, Retuschen vor allem im Himmel und den dunkleren Landschaftspartien, dezent gerahmt Zum Künstler: Philipp Peter Roos war Sohn des Malers Johann Heinrich Roos und Bruder des Malers Johann Melchior Roos. Ausgebildet wurde er zunächst von seinem Vater und ab 1677 in Rom von dem Kirchenmaler Giacinto Brandi (1621-1691), seinem Schwiegervater. Roos betätigte sich, in der Tradition der Familie, als Tiermaler. Oft hat er Ölbilder von Hirten und Herden in Landschaften gemalt. In seguito prese casa a Tivoli, la sua dimora era circondata di animali, tanto da essere chiamata L'Arca di Noè, che il pittore usava costantemente come modelli per i suoi dipinti.           (Sankt Goar, 1657 - Roma, 1706) Scena di caccia Olio su tela, cm 94X134 Figlio e allievo del pittore Johann Heinrich Roos, Philipp Peter Roos, conosciuto anche come Rosa da Tivoli, giunse in Italia nel 1677 e vi trascorrerà tutta la vita. Dopo un primo periodo nella bottega di Giacinto Brandi, di cui sposerà la figlia Maria Isabella nel 1681, si dedicò a dipingere la campagna laziale. Trasferitosi a Tivoli, da cui il toponomastico soprannome, si specializzò in paesaggi arcadici, descrivendo in modo particolare animali. Non è stato ancora coinvolto uno studio complessivo sulla sua vasta produzione, ma è indubbia la ragguardevole fortuna critica e commerciale, tanto che le sue opere erano collezionate in tutta Europa. È indiscutibile la peculiarità estetica del dipinto in esame che offre un utile metro qualitativo per distinguerlo dai prodotti della prolifica bottega, misurandosi con gli autografi conservati in Palazzo Doria Pamphili a Roma, quelli presenti al Museo dell'Hermitage, il Paul Getty Museum di Los Angeles e infine al Castello Sforzesco. Si deve altresì far notare la peculiare conduzione pittorica, veloce, corsiva e grassa di colore, in modo particolare se si osservano le rocce e i velli degli animali raffigurati, a dimostrazione del talento pittorico dell'autore.
