UGO RONDINONE (SWISS B. 1964)CLOCKWORK FOR ORACLES - ORANGE, 2002Mirror, coloured plastic gel and wood Signed and dated 2002 (verso)77 x 67cm (30¼ x 26¼ in.)Provenance:Matthew Marks Gallery, New York Acquired from the above in 2007Prolific and versatile, Swiss-born Ugo Rondinone is renowned for his spatially conscious works, from monumental public installations to immersive indoor exhibitions. Rondinone is represented by Gladstone Gallery and Sadie Coles HQ; he has exhibited at the Centre Pompidou, the Albertina Museum, and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Many of Rondinone's best-known works, such as Seven Magic Mountains in Ivanpah Valley, are seductive in their simplicity. Brightly coloured and sharply outlined, there is an elegant clarity to the artist's mixed-media creations. This aesthetic appeal should not detract from their serious conceptual concerns: the present work, part of the Clockwork for Oracles installation, is no exception. Originally exhibited against a backdrop of newspaper clippings as a group of 52 similar compositions - one for every week of the year - Clockwork for Oracles highlights the issues of temporality and modern information culture. Rondinone subverts the function of a window - a common motif - by substituting a mirror for what should be a portal to the outside world. In line with the Ciceronian conception of the eyes as the window to the soul, the viewer is invited to look inward and prioritise what is truly important over the distracting currents of the everyday. An attractive and cerebral work, Clockwork for Oracles is a warning both against navel-gazing and being overwhelmed by a deluge of media, chiming perhaps with the conclusion of Voltaire's Candide: 'let us cultivate our garden.'

Technique: Stone from the Valle Maggia, Ticino/Switzerland on Depiction Size: 14cm. Sheet Size: 24,5cm. 17 Notation: Signed, dated and numbered. Publisher: Parkett-Verlag, Zurich (publisher). Number: 4/50. Condition: The object is in a very good condition. With Parkett magazine. "The Pop dandy is aware of the aesthetic surfaces to which he owes his subjectivity and enjoys taking both serious and ironic stabs at it and himself. His melancholy is articulated in camp; he celebrates his longings in a lusty mix of excessive empathy and affectionate self-irony. He acts out his life in a self-devised aesthetic universe, an isolated space that is filled with the media of his longing, with the pictures and the music that he loves. There he plays a game of sentimental identification and contemplative self-detachment that allows him to enjoy his melancholy split ego." Jan Verwoert, Parkett no. 52, 1998. UGO RONDINONE (Brunnen 1962–lives and works in Vienna) SIEBTERJANUARNEUNZEHNHUNDERTACHTUNDNEUNZIG. 1998. Acrylic airbrush on canvas and silkscreen on plexiglass plaque. Diameter 220 cm. Provenance: - Galerie Hauser & Wirth, Zurich (verso with the label). - Purchased from the above by the present owner in 1998, since then private collection Switzerland. Website: www.ugorondinone.com/artwork/14698/. A colourful, shimmering, vibrating mandala rises up before the viewer. Concentric circles of dark red, white, orange, light blue and pink, interspersed again and again with black, stretch across the large-format work to the bright green centre. While the red, outermost layer of paint is applied opaquely, the other colours are sprayed. The overlapping of colour, the fine transition at the edges of the circle and the particular flow of the sprayed acrylic make the work pulsate, almost float. Mandala paintings have been an integral part of the oeuvre of the Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone since 1991. In his extensive oeuvre, unlike almost any other artist, he devotes himself to concrete, limited themes (time, the cosmic cycle and the contrast between day and night), which he translates into equally well-defined series (landscapes, mandalas, horizons, windows, stars and walls). On the other hand, the question of the medium is not a limitation – he creates paintings, sculptures, room-sized installations, video works etc. The titles are always written as the full date of when the work was created. This gives the works, which often lack an individual hand, owing to the technique used, a very personal character. The mandala paintings can be read as an intensive examination of 20th century abstract art. On the one hand, there are of course, Jasper John's Target Paintings, which appear repeatedly in his body of work from 1955 onwards. The psychedelic moment of the vibrating circles is reminiscent of Victor Vasarely's Op Art. The unfathomable tones, on the other hand, awaken our memories of the Colour Field painting of a Mark Rothko or Kenneth Noland. The use of the shaped canvas goes back, of course, to the Minimalists around Frank Stella, who thereby liberated painting from the classic rectangular canvas; even before that, art history knows the tondo in Renaissance painting. In his analysis, Ugo Rondinone develops his own unmistakable signature style, characterised by technical perfection, strict concentration on themes and their stringent realisation, as well as a virtuoso handling of colour. Rondinone is currently showcasing his passion and curiosity about art and art history at the Museé d'art et d'histoire in Geneva, where he is presenting the museum’s collection in relation to his own works and completely redesigning the exhibition space. --------------- UGO RONDINONE (Brunnen 1962–lebt und arbeitet in Wien) SIEBTERJANUARNEUNZEHNHUNDERTACHTUNDNEUNZIG. 1998. Acryl-Airbrush auf Leinwand und Serigrafie auf Plexiglas-Platte. Durchmesser 220 cm. Provenienz: - Galerie Hauser & Wirth, Zürich (verso mit dem Etikett). - Bei obiger Galerie vom heutigen Besitzer 1998 erworben, seitdem Privatsammlung Schweiz. Website: www.ugorondinone.com/artwork/14698/. ---------------

Ugo Rondinone (Swiss 1964-) Still Life (Cardboard Leaning On The Wall), 2009 1/1, initialled and dated 'u. r. / 09', bronze cast, lead and paint (116.7cm x 115.8cm (46in x 45 1/2in)) "I always say that you don’t have to understand an artwork. You have just to feel it. In my work I use very basic raw symbols, something that everybody can relate to, from a child to an old person, from the East to the West." Ugo Rondinone Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone’s Liverpool Mountain currently stands outside Tate Liverpool – a glorious and joyful statement on both the power of colour and the presence art objects can have within the wider world. Whilst its form is minimalist and brutal – part megalith, part Constantin Brancusi’s Eternal Column – the colour is maximal, playful and bright. It is this push and pull between minimalism and the expressive, conceptualism and humour, that defines Rondinone’s work – and is very much in evidence in the present work. Still Life is, simultaneously, a minimalist sculpture, in the tradition of Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Richard Serra et al. and a ‘found object’, akin to Marcel Duchamp’s urinal or bottle rack. It is also a beautiful, witty reminder that anything can be art, if you approach it with the right mindset. Essential to these various elements working in sync is the quality of the object itself. It has to trick the eye into looking like cardboard (for it to be a kind of Ready-made) and yet it has to have a cool beauty all of its own (to read as a work of Minimalism). This has been achieved by a painstaking process of casting the original card in bronze and then filling the cast with lead (to give it dead-weight) and then painting the surface with absolute flatness, so the only marks on it are created by shadows in real folds. That these folds then take on a painterly quality, a hint of Abstract Expressionist dynamic, is a further layer that Rondinone adds. Placed against a wall it is inevitable that our minds should wander across the lines, their intersections, and start investing them with intention and emotion. If art’s defining purpose is to make us look again at the world around us, and to imbue it with a sense of wonder, then Rondinone’s Still Life is a perfect example. The everyday – and especially a discarded sheet of card – will never be ordinary again.
