GEORGE ROMNEY (BRITISH 1734-1802)PORTRAIT OF MISS ALBINIA HOBART (1759-1853), LATER LADY ALBINIA CUMBERLANDOil on canvas76.2 x 63.5cm (30 x 25 in.)Provenance:George Hobart, the sitter's fatherBy descent in the Cumberland familyMrs Everetts by 1938Newhouse Galleries, New YorkPrivate Collection, USA by 1954Nicholas Bagshawe Esq., where purchased by the present ownerEngraving:M. Cormack, published 21 June 1890 by Paul and Dominic Colnaghi & Co. Lady Albinia Cumberland, was the daughter of Albinia Holbart (1737/8- 1816), an eighteenth century celebrity, heiress of her father, and Countess of Buckinghamshire by her marriage in 1793. Her lifestyle and size made her the subject and victim of cartoons by James Gillray where she featured in over 50 satirical prints. The present lot was probably commissioned by the sitter's father, on the occasion of his daughter's marriage to Richard Cumberland on 25th June 1784. In his diary, Romney recorded the sittings of Miss Hobart directly before and after her wedding over the course of the period between 19 and 29th June. The reference to the sitter as Miss Hobart reflects the fact that her father did not assume the title of 3rd Earl until the passing of his brother, the 2nd Earl, in 1793. An example of the engraving of this portrait can be seen in the National Portrait Gallery collection (NPG D15666).

Edward Hay, fourth son of the 8th Earl of Kinnoull, and his wife Mary, nee Flower. In May 1788 she married Isaac Hawkins Browne of Badger, Salop., who served as MP for Bridgenorth from 1784 - 1812. The couple had no children. In his catalogue raisonné of Romney's work, Alex Kidson notes nine sittings by Mrs. Hawkins Browne between 28 January and 20 April 1793, with two further ones cancelled. Her husband paid Romney half his fee of 60 gns. At the first sitting and the remainder, along with the costs of packing and shipping, in March 1794. It was framed by Saunders (£5 18s) and sent on 24 July 1793. On 4 August, Mr. Hawkins Browne wrote to Romney thanking him for 'the very fine picture of Mrs. Hawkins Browne', which had recently arrived. He continued: 'I shall always set a high value upon it for her sake and for yours,' and stated that on his next trip to London he would 'take the first opportunity of returning you my best thanks in person' (Pierpont Morgan Library, New York, NY). According to Kidson, 'the portrait is one of the earliest in a sequence of female half-lengths which - arguably in response to the works of Lawrence and Raeburn - took the effects of loose brushwork and informality to new levels in Romney's portraiture'.

George Romney (1734-1802) Four studies of a seated and reclining woman the reverse with two further studies pen and brown ink, unframed 11 x 18.5cm The present sheet bears some similarities to Romney’s exploration of Serena, the heroine of a popular poem The Triumph of Temper, by the artist’s friend and biographer, William Hayley, published in 1781. The sentimental nature of the poem with the heroine’s unfailing good humour and kindness, overcoming tribulations and finding happiness in marriage, found enormous appeal, especially among female readers. There are several paintings exploring this theme, including one in the Harris Museum and Art Gallery, as well as versions in private collections, which show Serena quietly reading. A further painting, sold at Christie’s in 1966 and titled Serena in the Boat of Apathy, depicts a reclining Serena in classical costume (see Alex Kidson, George Romney 1734-1802, 2002, fig. 49).

GEORGE ROMNEY (BRITISH 1734-1802)A PORTRAIT OF FRANCIS REYNOLDS MORETON DUCIE, 1ST EARL OF DUCIE (1776-1840)Oil on canvas88 x 69cm (34½ x 27 in.)Provenance: Possibly, The Executors of the late 6th Earl Ducie,Sale Phillips, London, No680, lot 42 LiteratureAlex Kidson, George Romney: A Complete Catalogue of His Paintings, 2015, vol. 2 p.417, as 'untraced'. Thomas Reynolds-Moreton, 1st Earl of Ducie (1776-22) was the eldest son of Francis Reynolds-Moreton, 3rd Baron Ducie, a Whig Member of Parliament for Lancaster as well as a distinguished naval captain who fought several important engagements in the American War of Independence. Thomas Reynolds-Moreton attended Eton College and subsequently Exeter College, Oxford. In 1809 he succeeded his father as Baron Ducie and inherited estates in Gloustershire, shortly thereafter receiving a commission as Lieutenant-Colonel Commandant in the Royal West Gloucestershire Local Militia, Bristol. Ducie was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1814 and created 1st Earl of Ducie in 1837.The present portrait was commissioned by Reynolds-Moreton in 1794 and finished in 1795. At this time the sitter would have been eighteen and matriculated at the University of Oxford. Indeed, the portrait depicts Reynolds-Moreton in his nobleman's academic gown, the colour of which those of sufficient rank could choose themselves. Made of silk these luxurious garments were decorated with gold trim (matched by a golden tuft on their black velvet mortarboards). An object of some considerable pride to such young men, it is here recorded for posterity. George Romney was likely chosen for this commission as he had already proven his worth in the two magnificent full-length portraits previously executed of the sitter's father, the 3rd Baron, and his stepmother. His confident and loose brushstrokes exhibited a fresh spontaneity that attracted popular acclaim. Indeed, his sessions quickly became known as virtuoso 'performances' - John Wesley for example wrote that 'Mr. Romney is a painter indeed! He struck off an exact likeness at once, and did more in an hour than Sir Joshua did in ten.' A copy after this portrait was painted by Theophilus Clarke (1776-1831) and hangs in Exeter College, Oxford, the sitter's alma mater (perhaps commissioned by Reynolds-Moreton or the college itself to proudly record the future peer's attendance at Exeter, Reynolds-Moreton taking his own portrait with him). This later portrait is dated 1797, two years after the original was painted. Clarke's portrait is a half-length rather than the kit-kat that Romney was paid for, moreover various stylistic differences between the two testify to the present portrait being the original. The copy lacks the finesse of Romney's work in the handling of the pattern within the blue and gold gown, but also in the sitter's face where the proportion is lost, notably in the right eye and in the elongated crown of his head. The background, too, lacks the freedom exhibited in the Romney and Clarke was evidently not confident enough in his ability to copy the sitter's hands.

George Romney (1734-1802) John Howard visiting a prison pen and ink and wash on paper 29 x 52cm Provenance: [By repute and according to a label to the reverse: Collection of Alfred de Pass (1861-1952); Royal Institution of Truro by 1961; Sotheby's, where acquired by Agnew's by 1966] Exhibited: Kenwood, George Romney, Paintings and Drawings: Exhibition at the Iveagh Bequest, 1961, when loaned by Royal Institution Truro; Agnew's, French and English Drawings 1780-1965, 1966 The present drawing is one of a series on the subject of John Howard visiting a Lazaretto which captured Romney’s imagination over several years and recorded the suffering of prisoners. A philanthropist and social reformer, John Howard (1726-1790) had experienced captivity in 1756 when on board a ship taken by a French privateer where all the passengers and crew had been imprisoned in dreadful conditions. From circa 1773 onwards, he carried out inspections of prisons and lazarettos (plague hospitals) throughout Britain and Europe. He campaigned for the humane treatment of inmates and in 1777 published his first report - The State of Prisons in England and Wales. Romney was inspired by Howard’s heroism and initially planned to paint ‘two or three large pictures’ of prison scenes, according to his son John (see Patricia Jaffé, Drawings by George Romney from the Fitzwilliam Museum, 1977, pp. 58-59). The paintings however never materialised and instead Romney captured the subject in a series of studies and sketches depicting figures in dungeon-like prisons, which according to Patricia Jaffé can be interpreted as ‘generalised pictures of the miseries of pestilence ridden lazarettos’ (ibid, p. 58). It has been suggested that the crouching figure at the back of the scene looking on bears some resemblance to Romney himself. Framed 50.5 x 72cm

George Romney (British, 1734 - 1802) "Psyche in a Wood" Oil on Canvas. Provenance: Purchased at Sotheby's London 14 November 1990 Lot 61. The page from the original 1990 Sotheby's London catalog with this painting listed is included with the lot. Sight Size: 29 x 43 in. Overall Framed Size: 44 x 58 in. Literature: Gerhard Charles Rump, George Romney, 1974, Volume I, p.212, and Volume II p. 274. Romney became interested in the story of Cupid and Psyche shortly after his return from Italy in 1775. William Hayley, who met him in 1776 and became a close friend, records that early in their relationship they talked of 'producing a joint work on the adventures of Cupid and Psyche'. The story wasto be taken from "The Golden Ass" by Apuleius. Hayley described how Romney 'drew no less than eight elegant cartoons in black chalk'. Seven of these cartoons were given to the Liverpool Royal Institution in 1823 by the Artist's son, the Rev. John Romney, and were then presented to the Walker Art Gallery. Where they remain in 1948. Although Romney is thought to have gone on producing the cartoons until about 1783, this picture refers to the first of the set, "Psyche being blown by Zephyr" and was painted as early as 1776-7. In the finished painting the artist decided to portray just the figure of Psyche, omitting the head of Zephyr to the left, composing a new landscape behind and adding a scroll in the lower right corner. Romney alsways felt that history painting was more important than the portraits at which he worked all day; his son describes how these cartoons were produced in the evenings 'as a relaxation' and Hayley tells how painting by candlelight came to interest him. A drawing for Psyche on the reverse of a study of "The infant Shakespeare nursed by Tragedy and Comedy" was formerly in the collection of the Royal Institution, Truro, until sold in 1966.
