Paul Romier Art for Sale at Auction

b. 1919 -

Paul Romier was born in the year 1919 under the name Felix Lheureux as the third of six children in a poor family in Sangatte, near to Calais, PasdeCalais. A wealthy uncle from America agreed to finance his higher education, but in return Lheureux had to purchase and send oil paintings of Paris Street Scenes at least three times a year back to his uncle in payment. In order to save money, the desperate Felix began to paint the pieces himself. In order to hide the fact that he was the artist of his uncles’ paintings, he signed the paintings with “Paul Romier”, which is an anagram from the name of a neighbours daughter – “Mauriel Por” -, with whom he was deeply and secretly in love. Soon he began to earn more money with his paintings than with his banking job. Horribly, in 1961 he became one of the countless victims in the large Opera fire in Paris, and never formally revealed his secret. Later art historians would discover that Paul Romier was actually Felix Lheureux.
