Measurements: 131 x 105 cm; 169 x 124 cm (frame). We are in front of a seated portrait of a male character of the Spanish high bourgeoisie. He wears a black suit with a starched shirt underneath. The language is realistic, inscribed in the nineteenth-century figurative tradition in its desire to capture an almost photographic precision. However, the pictorial values stand out: the work of light shading the facial features, the rich qualities of the garments and the slightly rosy flesh tones. Professor and academic of the School of Fine Arts of Seville, José María Romero worked for the Duke of Montpensier. In 1866 he moved to Madrid where he dedicated himself to portraiture, specializing in children's portraits. Among his works are "Ricardo and Federico Santaló" and "Enrique, Concepción and Salud Santaló", preserved in El Prado, and "El niño Eugenio de la Borbolla en traje de guardiamarina", preserved in the Romantic Museum of Madrid. He also cultivated genre painting, flower painting and religious painting, among whose production stands out "Imposición de la casulla a san Ildefonso", today housed in the cathedral of Cadiz. Romero y López also participated in several National Exhibitions of Fine Arts and won numerous awards. It presents restorations.

Professor and academic at the School of Fine Arts in Seville, he worked for the Duke of Montpensier. In 1866 he moved to Madrid where he dedicated himself to portraiture, specializing in children's portraits, such as those by Ricardo and Federico Santaló and Enrique, Concepción and Salud Santaló (Prado) and El Niño Eugenio de la Borbolla en traje de midshipman ( Romantic Museum, Madrid). He also cultivated genre painting, flower painting and religious painting, in whose production the Imposition of the chasuble on Saint Ildefonso (Cathedral of Cádiz) stands out. He participated in several National Exhibitions of Fine Arts and received awards in the editions of 1840, 1858, 1860, 1862 and 1879.

We are in front of a seated portrait of a male personage of the Spanish high bourgeoisie, identified as José Francisco Martínez thanks to the note in one of the documents that he holds. He is wearing a black suit with a starched shirt underneath. The language is realistic, in the nineteenth-century figurative tradition in its desire to capture an almost photographic precision. However, the painting's pictorial values stand out: the work of the light, which shades the facial features, the rich qualities of the garments and the slightly rosy flesh tones. Mention should be made of the architectural background on the left-hand side. A teacher and academic at the Seville School of Fine Arts, José María Romero worked for the Duke of Montpensier. In 1866 he moved to Madrid, where he devoted himself to portraiture, specialising in children's portraits. His works include "Ricardo and Federico Santaló" and "Enrique, Concepción and Salud Santaló", now in the Prado, and "El niño Eugenio de la Borbolla en traje de guardiamarina", now in the Museo Romántico in Madrid. He also produced genre, flower and religious paintings, including "Imposición de la casulla a san Ildefonso" ("Imposición de la casulla a san Ildefonso", now in Cadiz cathedral). Romero y López also took part in several National Fine Arts Exhibitions and won numerous awards.

JOSÉ MARÍA ROMERO Y LÓPEZ (1815 - 1880), The Annunciation ROMERO Y LÓPEZ 1815 Sevilla 1880 Firmado "J.Romero". Obra característica de la faceta de Romero como pintor devocional en la Sevilla romántica. Si bien, José María Romero es mejor conocido por sus retratos, donde tuvo un éxito notable entre la nobleza y la burguesía de la ciudad hispalense, también abordó en numerosas ocasiones pinturas de contenido religioso en los que funde la influencia del sempiterno Murillo con una cierta atmósfera cálida y difuminada propia de los pintores románticos sevillanos cuando decidían ejecutar algún cuadro religioso. Tal es el caso de José Gutiérrez de Vega, con quien a veces se ha confundido a nuestro pintor. La Virgen, con gesto lleno de humildad, acepta la voluntad divina que le transmite el Arcángel Gabriel. Un rompimiento de gloria penetra en la estancia desde el margen superior, mientras desciende el Espíritu Santo en forma de paloma, acompañado por numerosos angelotes y querubines. 140 x 80 cm
