Painter, Sculptor, b. 1935 - d. 2019

Otto Donald Rogers (born 19 December 1935) is a Canadian painter and sculptor from rural Saskatchewan whose abstract works reflects his belief as a member of the Bahá'í Faith in unity in diversity. His work has been widely exhibited. It is held in many private and public collections in Canada and other countries.

Otto Donald Rogers was born on 19 December 1935 in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan.[1][2] He grew up on a farm near Kelfield, Saskatchewan. He attended high school in Kindersley, and then studied at the Saskatoon Teachers' College from 1952 to 1953.[1] He took an art class with Wynona Mulcaster, who was impressed by his talent and encouraged Rogers to pursue a career in art.[3] Mulcaster introduced him to cubism, a style he was to adopt for himself.[4] Rogers attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison from 1954 to 1959.[1] In 1955 he obtained a scholarship from the Saskatchewan Arts Board that let him attend the Emma Lake Artist's Workshop led by Jack Shadbolt.[5] He obtained a BSc in Art Education in 1958 and an MSc in Fine Art in 1959.[2]

After graduating from university Rogers spent a few months in New York City.[1] He then joined the faculty of the arts department of the University of Saskatchewan, where he taught from 1959 to 1988.[2] His student Robert Christie remembers Rogers as a charismatic teacher. He and the structurist Eli Bornstein dominated the department. Another student said he was "a fantastic mentor, a task master with very high standards."[6] He helped rejuvenate the Emma Lake Artist's Workshops between 1971 and 1987.[2] In the early 1970s Rogers spent three months working in Iceland.[6] In 1973 he became a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.[5] From 1973 to 1978 Rogers was head of the university's art department.[6] The sculptor Anthony Caro asked Rogers to participate in his Triangle workshop in New York in 1984, and in a second Triangle workshop in Barcelona in 1987. The Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art purchased three of Rogers' sculptural reliefs.[6]

In 1959 Rogers married Barbara Nelson, who brought him to the Bahá'í Faith.[1] He became a member of the Canadian Baha'i community in 1960.[5] Rogers became a leader in Baha'i activities in Saskatchewan, and held increasingly senior positions in the organization of this religion.[1] In 1988 Rogers left the University of Saskatchewan and moved to Haifa, Israel, where for ten years he was a Counselor member of the International Teaching Centre at the Bahá'í World Centre.[2] While based in Israel he visited Russia and met previously banned abstract artists. He was conducted through the vaults of the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, where he saw the works of artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich.[3]

In 1998 Rogers returned to Canada and settled in Milford in Prince Edward County, Ontario. His studio there was designed by his son-in-law Siamak Hariri, an architect, who is married to his daughter Sasha Rogers. She is also a painter.[1]

Rogers follows the Cubist-Constructivist tradition started by Pablo Picasso, Julio González and David Smith. His early work included portraits, still lifes, landscapes and cityscapes. Later his work became increasingly abstract.[6] He has worked in different media that range from color-field painting to assembled steel sculpture.[7] His paintings show the influence of the prairie spaces and of his Baha'i beliefs.[1] Both his faith and his art reflect the central belief of unity in diversity.[3] Clement Greenberg said of the Otto Rogers when he was a young man, that he is “an artist of amazing talent, worthy of an international reputation.”[8] He has been given many awards for his painting, sculpture and graphic arts.[1] Rogers' work is held in public and private collections in several countries. These include:[2]

Like many western Canadian artists such as Jack Shadbolt, Takao Tanabe, Don Jarvis, Doug Haynes, Gordon Smith and Ted Godwin, Rogers’ early work reflected an interest in the aesthetic of late automatic surrealism. Many including Rogers did not seem comfortable creating paintings that were exclusively pure abstract inventions. Rogers preferred instead to look out upon the world, synthesize and abstract from a model drawn from nature. For Rogers, growing up on the prairies, the most evident visual splendour was the interaction between big sky country and the patterns, colours and variations to be seen in the prairie farmlands. Cool Spring Rain is such a painting. Ostensibly it is an abstract composition, yet its distinct horizon line, light-filled bluish sky, vestige clouds, attenuated horizontal format and floating celestial orbs locate it as an abstracted prairie scene. Certain forms suggest trees along the horizon, a grain elevator and rural buildings.Even the faithless will often marvel at the majesty of the vastness of prairie vistas in relation to our tiny place within its grandeur and scale. We experience being ‘grounded’ beholding the weather swings and sudden changes in light conditions. For Rogers, this would become even more profoundly personal and spiritual. He became a senior member of the Bahá'í Faith; his beliefs took him to Haifa, Israel where he served for ten years as an elder. He has since returned to Canada and has taken up residence in Prince Edward County, Ontario.Estimate: $7,000–9,000

OTTO DONALD ROGERS (1935 - ), R.C.A.VASE OF FLOWERSPASTEL; SIGNED AND DATED 63sight 28" x 19.75" - 71.1 x 50.2 cm.Note:OTTO DONALD ROGERS (1935 - ), R.C.A.Between vision, design and expression there is no seam. Neither is one thing the cause and another the result. I have been referred to as a landscape painter and yet my efforts have concentrated on composition as poetic abstraction, an activity in which I make reference to nature but do not seek a landscape depiction. Rather, the search is for a heightened realm of reality. While developing the configuration on each canvas, panel or paper, my hope is to achieve a resolution that transcends the act of making, presenting the viewer with an elevated feeling, with a presence so palpable that time is suspended.- Otto Rogers - Otto Rogers was born in 1935 in the fural town of Kerrobert, Saskatchewan. He attended the Saskatchewan Teachers College (1954) where he was influenced by Wynona Mulcaster to study art. He received a Bachelor of Science in Art Education (1958) and a Masters in Fine Art (1959) from the University of Wisconsin. He returned to Canada to teach at the University of Saskatchwan. As Professor and Head of the Department of Art at the university (1959-1988), Rogers helped revive the Emma Lake Artist Workshop, Saskatchewan (1971-1987). Rogers became involved in the Baha'i faith through his wife, Barbara Nelson, and his involvement in the Baha'i Board led him to work in Israel in 1988. He lived in Haifa, Israel, where he served two, five-year terms as a Counselor member of the International Teaching Center at the World Centre for the Bahai Faith. Rogers returned to Canada in 1998 and set up a studio in Milford, Ontario, where he still works today.Rogers has exhibited internationally for over five decades and his works are found in over 1500 international public, corporate and private collections, including Art Gallery of Ontario, MacKenzie Art Gallery, Regina; Mendal Art Gallery, Saskatoon; Montreal Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, Barcelona Spain; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the National Gallery of Canada; and the National Gallery of Iceland. Rogers has received numerous awards and honours, including several Canada Council Awards. He has been appointed a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Artists, and his works are represented in the collections of the National Museum of Art (Iceland), National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), Collection of Modern Art (Spain), Museum of Fine Arts (Massachusetts), Edmonton Art Gallery, Mendel Art Gallery (Saskatoon), and the Shell Oil Collection, among many others.Selected Corporate, Public and Private CollectionsArt Gallery of Ontario Bank of AmericaBank of MontrealBank of Nova ScotiaCadillac FairviewCanada Council Art BankCineplex-OdeonClaridge CollectionDeutsche BankEsso ResourcesGeneral FoodsGeneral FoodsImperial OilJeffrey Poole, LawyerMacKenzie Art Gallery, Regina McMichael Canadian Art CollectionMendal Art Gallery, SaskatoonMontreal Museum of Art Museum of Contemporary Art, Barcelona Spain Museum of Fine Arts, BostonNational Gallery of Canada; National Gallery of IcelandPetro CanadaSaskatchewan Arts BoardScotiabankSun Life of CanadaUniversity of SaskatchewanWinnipeg Art GalleryXerox Canada IncSelected Solo Exhibitions2013Otto Rogers, Oeno Gallery, Prince Edward County, ONOtto Rogers, Mira Godard Gallery, Toronto, ON2009Appearance of Light, Oeno Gallery, Prince Edward County, ON2007Oeno Gallery, Prince Edward County, ONGallery Jones, Vancouver, BCPaul Kuhn Gallery, Calgary, AB2006 Oeno Gallery, Prince Edward County, ON2004Nickle Arts Museum, Calgary, ABGallery Jones, Vancouver, BCPaul Kuhn Gallery, Calgary, AB2003 Paul Kuhn Gallery, Calgary, AB2002Ron Moore Gallery, Toronto, ONPaul Kuhn Gallery, Calgary, AB2001The Gallery/Art Placement, Saskatoon, SK2000Paul Kuhn Gallery, Calgary, ABBuschlen Mowatt Gallery, Vancouver, BC1998Buschlen Mowatt Gallery, Vancouver, BC (catalogue)1995Buschlen Mowatt Gallery, Vancouver, BC1993 Art Placement Inc/The Gallery, Saskatoon, Sask1990 Otto Rogers - Paintings from Haifa, Mira Goddard Gallery, Toronto, ON1982 Otto Rogers - A Survey 1973-1982, Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon, SK1981 Art Placement Inc/The Gallery, Saskatoon, SK1980 Gordon Snelgrove Art Gallery.
