Severin Roesen Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1816 - d. 1872

(b. 1815, Germany; d. 1872) American painter. Little is known about the life of Severin Roesen. He moved to the New York with his family sometime in the mid 1800s. Here, he exhibited some of his paintings at the American Art Union. He moved to Williamsport, Pennsylvania around 1860 where he was warmly received by the area residents, who adamantly supported and commissioned his painting. Here, he continued to paint still-lives emulating the style of the 17th century Dutch and German painters. Known for his lavish and detailed depictions of fruit and flowers, Roeson used bright, radiant colors in his painting. Nearly a century after Roesen’s lifetime, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy hung several of his paintings in the White House. Roesen was one of America’s foremost still-life artists of the 1880s. The last record of the artist in Williamsport is in 1872; the place of his death is unknown.

      • SEVERIN ROESEN OIL, STILL LIFE WITH STRAWBERRIES AND FLOWERS
        Dec. 09, 2023

SEVERIN ROESEN OIL, STILL LIFE WITH STRAWBERRIES AND FLOWERS

        Est: $60,000 - $80,000

ROESEN, Severin (1816-1872). Still Life with Strawberries and Flowers. Oil on Canvas. 35" x 45" canvas. June, 1995: Cleaned, Lines, Restretched, Maimeri retouch, Winton Varnish by the Chicago Conservation Center. Severin Roesen is a painter known for his abundant fruit and flower still lifes and is today recognized as one of the major American still-life painters of the mid-nineteenth century. This gorgeous Victorian oil painting by Severin Roesen is considered one of the finest of the still-life genre. Though Roesen was widely acclaimed for his work during his lifetime, it wasn't almost 100 years after his death that his paintings were brought back to the attention of the larger public by First Lady Jackie Kennedy, when she hung several of his paintings in the newly refurbished White House. This vibrant still-life is a splendid example of this important artist’s work. Roesen's complex, lavish still-life paintings of fruit and flowers established the tradition for the genre in 19th-century America as well as the style for large canvases suitable for dining-room decoration. These works reveal his training as a painter of enamels and china with their crisp drawing, bright colors and smooth surfaces. This particular painting anticipates Roesen's fully mature style, exhibiting his synthesis of 17th-century Dutch still life, the Düsseldorf Academy's sharp naturalism and the era's strong interest in botany. The composition of the painting unfolds across the canvas, drawing the eye to the center where a cream colored marble dish sits brimming with strawberries. The fruit seems to spill over the edge of the elegant dish, and into the viewer’s space. To the left of the strawberries, a gorgeous arrangement of flowers is gathered in a vase, which is also filled to capacity. Flowers flow onto the table, unable to squeeze in with the rest. On the right, Roesen depicts luscious grapes, a peach , and small pears. The fullness of the painting evokes a sense of abundance; a theme in many of his rich still-life paintings. Born in Germany, Severin Roesen exhibited in Cologne in 1847 and is thought to have studied in Düsseldorf. Originally trained in the decorative arts tradition as a painter on porcelain, Roesen developed a style which included a great attention to detail and an interest in brilliant color. The artist emigrated to the United States in 1848, where he lived, worked and exhibited in New York City until 1852, when he moved to Pennsylvania, and settled eventually in Williamsport.

Severin Roesen (American, 1815-1872) - Still Life with Fruit and Champagne on a Marble Ledge Signed ‘Roesen’ bottom right, oil on canvas 37 1/8 x 44 in. (94.3 x 111.8cm) Executed circa 1860. Housed in an impressive giltwood period frame with stenciled ‘rustic rock’ pattern in the cove and floral ornaments on the outside.  Provenance Chapellier Gallery, New York, New York. Coe Kerr Gallery, New York, New York. Acquired directly from the above in 1977. Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, Virginia (accession no. 77.12–museum purchase through the Williams Fund). "Feast," Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, Virginia, March 15-June 25, 2006; also William King Regional Arts Center, Abingdon, Virginia, October 27, 2006–January 7, 2007 (traveling exhibition).  Literature Clarke Bustarde, “Feast Your Eyes: Cross-Cultural Banquet Offers Tasteful Art,” in Richmond Times-Dispatch, March 17, 2006, p. D1 (illustrated).  Lot Essay Severin Roesen’s autumnal still life displays a sensual array of fruit on a gray marble ledge adjacent to a flute of effervescent champagne. Best known for his floral subjects, the German-born artist adapted his practice to satisfy the demands of affluent American collectors, who tended to favor fruit-filled compositions to flowers. Executed a decade after Roesen relocated to the United States, the present work boasts all the luminousness and virtuosity of his previous efforts. Roesen’s mastery over the still life genre lies in his ability to capture the sumptuousness of nature with precision and painstaking attention to detail. His works, characterized by a vibrant palette and lush, bountiful compositions, approach fruit (and flowers and foliage) as “sculptural” objects. Modeled in three dimensions, with all the weight and definition one might expect, each is arranged in an overlapping manner, creating an atmosphere of luxury and abundance. At a commanding 37 x 44 inches, the present work is a tour de force of Roesen’s observational skill and technical acumen. The fruits, comprised of luscious grapes, succulent peaches, raspberries, apples, and citrus, are articulate with a remarkable degree of realism. His choice of subject matter reflects not only a fascination with the aesthetic properties of fruit but also themes related to luxury, abundance, and the cycle of life. Roesen’s deft handling of light and shadow further enhances the illusion of three-dimensionality, creating a sense of tangible presence and of gravitas within the composition. Underlying the strongest of Roesen's paintings is a symbolic visual language that adds additional layers of meaning to his fruit-filled presentations. The number and variety of fruit is suggestive of the spirit of optimism and opportunity—indeed of beauty and bounty—that pervaded antebellum America. Moreover, Roesen invites viewers to contemplate the richness of the natural world and to reflect upon the cyclical, fleeting nature of existence. Recalling the Dutch Old Master tradition of still life painting, works like the present lot are profound meditations on the interconnectedness of nature, art, and life.

        Est: $15,000 - $25,000

Severin Roesen (American/German, 1848-1872) Still Life of Fruit with Bird's Nest, c. 1860-70 oil on canvas signed Roesen (lower right) 25 x 30 inches. The Collection of Philip and Judith Sieg, Bellefonte, Pennsylvania This lot is accompanied by a copy of the letter from Dr. Judith Hansen O'Toole confirming its authenticity. Provenance: Alexander Walsh, South Woodstock, Connecticut Acquired from the above by the present owners, 1984 Lot note: Severin Roesen, one of America's preeminent early still life painters, created the present magnificent still life circa 1860-1870, when the artist lived in Williamsport, Pennsylvania and enjoyed the patronage of the newly rich, predominately German community engaged in the lumber industry. Anxious to celebrate the natural abundance of the New World, the population in central Pennsylvania responded positively to the lush images of fruits and flowers produced by Roesen. Painted in the still life tradition of their homeland, the artist was trained in Cologne and his compositions resonated with the Victorian mindset of new Americans. Still Life of Fruit with Bird's Nest is exuberant with fruit so plentiful they have fallen from the vase, or perhaps never made it into the arrangement, as if the arranger was stopped in mid action. Small droplets of water further attest to their freshness. The popular late nineteenth century concept of memento mori, or a reminder of life's fragility, is present in this fruit that will soon fade, as well as in the suspended activity of the arranger who has not yet finished their task. One could also see the appeal of Roesen's subject matter to the more prosperous citizens of the "new world," as it reflects the natural abundance of the Americas. Of further importance is the presence of the exquisitely rendered bird's nest containing three eggs, the same number of children the artist had with his wife, Wilhelmina, also German-born. In the artist's typical style, the fruits are presented in a shallow picture plane and arranged directly on a dark, marble tabletop. The fresh, brightly colored fruits stand out against a slightly modulated background and are executed with precise rendering of detail and texture throughout, as was Roesen's technique. An additional important feature of this still life is the authentic signature in italic script, as the artist signed only about twenty-five percent of his works. The signature is applied as if formed by a grape tendril, one of Roesen's favored signature formats.

Severin Roesen (American, 1805-1882) Still Life with Fruit and Flowers in a Landscape, 1850 Oil on canvas 36 x 29 inches (91.4 x 73.7 cm) Signed and dated lower right: S. Roesen / 1850 PROVENANCE: The artist; The Stern Family; Estate of Kathleen Stern-Fischer, Monmouth County, New Jersey, 2004; Private collection. Opulent, majestic and strikingly theatrical, Severin Roesen's Still Life with Fruit and Flowers in a Landscape of 1850 is a superlative example of nineteenth-century still-life painting, and an exceedingly important work in the history of American art. Roesen, one of America's preeminent early still-life painters, created this masterwork in 1850, only two years after he arrived in the United States from Germany. Having descended through a single family since its original purchase directly from the artist, Still Life with Fruit and Flowers hung for generations in the family's estate in New Jersey, built around 1880 along the Neversink River. Interestingly, relatively little is known about Roesen's biography. He was born in Germany around 1816 and exhibited in Cologne in 1847 before immigrating to America the following year, likely to escape the turmoil of the German revolutions of 1848. Trained in Düsseldorf as a porcelain painter, Roesen carried on this European tradition in his American canvases, imbuing his still lifes with a dazzling attention to naturalistic detail and bursts of brilliant color. Upon his first years in the U.S. between 1848 and 1852, Roesen sent eleven still-life paintings to the American Art Union, eight of which depicted flowers. Certainly, as a porcelain painter, Roesen would likely have been principally skilled in floral painting; however, mid-nineteenth-century American tastes favored paintings of fruit over flowers, which may have driven Roesen in this direction in his compositional choices. In this dramatic vertical composition, Roesen depicts a luxurious floral bouquet and cornucopia of colorful fruit with naturalistic detail and brilliant illumination emphasizing the sculptural aspect of each object. The floral still life is arranged in a garden urn set atop a richly veined black-marble table top, which would have signified affluence to a nineteenth-century audience. Surrounding its base is an abundance of fruit piled so high as to almost obscure the vessel entirely, including an exotic pineapple on the left and a watermelon on the right, a combination seen rarely in Roesen's still lifes. Roesen's work during this period follows in the Dutch tradition of still-life composition popularized by Johann Wilhelm Preyer, the foremost painter in Düsseldorf at the time. Roesen was undoubtedly familiar with Preyer, who had visited Holland in 1835 and studied the works of Jan van Huysum and Rachel Ruysch and formulated his own carefully articulated style of still-life painting based on the Dutch masters. Preyer's influence resonated in the United States in the nineteenth century, due to both Roesen's canvases and the exhibition of Preyer's work at New York galleries, and an entire school of artists began to grow around these artists' compositional styles. (W. Gerdts and R. Burke, American Still Life Painting, New York, 1971, p. 61) Roesen's lavish still lifes epitomized the upper-class tastes of the Victorian era. Capturing with abundant detail the most colorful and lush varieties of flowers and fruits, these canvases represented a joyous celebration of the splendor of earth's bounty. For Americans in the mid-nineteenth century, a sense of optimism, pride in the beauty and richness of their new nation, and thanksgiving for their newfound prosperity were all reflected in Roesen's still lifes. Just as the Hudson River School of landscape painters expressed their awe in the untouched picturesque wilderness by creating expansive, panoramic vistas, so did still-life pai

SEVERIN ROESEN American (1815-1872) Still Life of Fruit with Goblet of Flowers oil on canvas, signed lower right "Roesen," inscribed on the reverse "Purchased by Geo. W. Jones April 11th 1878 / of John W. Quincy / who bought it of / the Artist" 25 x 35 inches Provenance: The artist; John W. Quincy; George W. Jones 1878; Ambassador and Mrs. Joseph Verner Reed; The estate of Ambassador Reed; Private Collection, New York, New York; Driscoll Babcock, New York, New York; Private Collection, New York. Other Notes: Severin Roesen was the finest and best-known still life painter in America during the mid nineteenth century. His works are highly esteemed for their botanical accuracy and variety of species, and scholars have described his work as "highly finished, brilliantly colored, and at times extravagantly elaborate, [executed with] meticulous draftsmanship and technical virtuosity."[1] Roesen came to New York in 1848 from Germany, selling and exhibiting his paintings through the American Art Union until about 1860. Roesen ultimately settled in Williamsport, Pennsylvania until his death around 1872. Roesen's still lifes show fruit and flowers in abundance, each in their peak beauty, which many scholars believe alludes to the growth and prosperity of the population and society at the time.[2] Whereas previous, traditional still lifes were of the vanity genre, portraying fruit and beautiful flowers with some allusion to their already expiring lifetime, reminding us that everything good will eventually end, with Roesen's this theme is refreshingly, nowhere to be found. An abundance of fruit piled from the marble table, to a stand, even the tendrils of the fruit (one of which making the artist's signature, continue above in cloudlike, somewhat floral structures. Their curves dance freely in the air giving an optimistic feel to the scene. Still life paintings by Roesen are in the collections of Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Rose Hill Mansion in Geneva, NY; Westmoreland Museum of American Art; The Metropolitan Museum of Art; The Amon Carter Museum; University of Vermont; National Museum of American Art; St. Louis Art Museum; The Shelburne Museum; The White House; the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art; Munson Williams Procter Institute; the United States Department of State and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. SEVERIN ROESEN Still Life with Fruit.

        Est: $15,000 - $20,000

SEVERIN ROESEN Still Life with Fruit. Oil on wood panel, circa 1850-55. 475x610 mm; 18 3/4x24 inches. Signed in oil, lower right recto. This work has been authenticated by Judith H. O'Toole, with a letter of authentication dated July 28, 1994. Sold Sotheby's, New York, September 21, 1994, lot 11; ex-collection private collection, New York. Roesen (1816- after 1872) was born in Boppard, Germany and was a porcelain painter in Cologne before immigrating to New York in 1848 as a refugee fleeing the peasant revolutions in Europe. He spent time in New York and Philadelphia before moving to Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He is known for his meticulous and realistic still lifes, often utilizing the recurring motifs of flowers, wine glasses, decorative footed plates with strawberries and pilsner glasses. The compositions are reminiscent of 17th and 18th century Dutch still lifes and represent the abundance of nature and the richness of the New World. He left Williamsport in 1872 and thereafter disappeared from any public records.
