Though no name appears on the background vessel, its buff-and-black smokestacks mark it as a Canadian Pacific ship, while waving wheat and agrarian pulchritude serve as the welcoming committee in this post-World War I invitation to set one's roaming sights on North America. Perhaps the most interesting inclusion in Rodmell's design is the "Red Ensign"-a red flag with the Union Jack in the upper corner that originated in 1707 as the flag flown by the Royal Navy and later specifically by the British Merchant Marine. The Belfast Steam Ship Company was established in 1852 to provide additional steam communication between Belfast and Liverpool. The fleet ended up being absorbed as part of P&O Ferries Limited in 1895 while maintaining their appellation. Rodmell cleverly puts forth the yin yang nature of the line's night passenger service between its two key cities with unforced simplicity. After attending the College of Arts in his native Hull, Rodmell worked extensively for the Swedish-American Line and for Norddeutscher Lloyd.
