Property from a Private Collection, Savannah, GA Description: Charles Rodius (German/Australian, 1802-1860), mezzo-soprano Sara Flower, Charcoal and Conte Crayon, 1851, signed and dated lower left, with inscription on mat "Jenny Lind by Charles Rodius," with photocopy attached to back of frame reading 'Drawing of Jenny Lind, 'The Swedish Nightingale' by Charles Rodius,' matted and framed, with conservation glass. We thank David Hansen, Australian art historian and curator who recently assembled a major exhibition of the work of Charles Rodius for the State Library of New South Wales, Sydney, for his help in identifying the subject. Jenny Lind never visited the Australian colonies. Frame size: 20 7/8 in. x 18 in. Charles Rodius was a German-born artist and printmaker. He studied in France before moving to work and teach in England. While living in England he was accused of theft, found guilty and sent to an Australian penal colony. He was assigned to the Department of Public Works in Sydney where he drew military plans and architectural sketches. He was eventually granted a ticket of exemption and remained in Australia, where he made his living as an artist. His work is held in several major Australian museums and galleries. • RODIUS: Nunberri, Chief of the Nunnerahs, N.S. Wales (original lithograph)
      Apr. 10, 2016

RODIUS: Nunberri, Chief of the Nunnerahs, N.S. Wales (original lithograph)

      Est: $1,000 - $1,500

RODIUS, Charles (1802-1860): Nunberri. Chief of the Nunnerahs, N.S. Wales. Drawn from Nature and on Stone by Charles Rodius. Notes: An original lithograph on tinted paper, signed and dated in the image (visible image size 245 x 125 mm), recently matted, framed and glazed; a few light creases; in excellent condition. Published by J.G. Austin, Sydney, 1834. 'In 1831, Rodius had begun issuing lithographic portraits of Aboriginal "chiefs" and their wives, completing the series in 1834. These portraits have a penetrating intensity which arises out of the artist's wish to portray the natives exactly as they appeared - somewhat wretched after living side by side with white colonists. The "Sydney Herald" remarked on "the extraordinary fidelity with which the characteristic countenances of these sable children of nature are delineated"' ('The Dictionary of Australian Artists ... to 1870').

    • RODIUS: Life in Sydney, N.S. Wales (original lithograph)
      Apr. 10, 2016

RODIUS: Life in Sydney, N.S. Wales (original lithograph)

      Est: $800 - $1,200

RODIUS, Charles (1802-1860): Life in Sydney, N.S. Wales [Scene in the Streets of Sydney]. Notes: An original lithograph featuring seven Aboriginal figures on a patch of weedy ground, with virtually all unprinted sections of the paper now very neatly cut away (for reasons that are not immediately obvious, but possibly to remove damaged portions), with the salvaged tableau mounted on paper with the title written in ink below the image (maximum dimensions of printed surface 150 x 280 mm, visible 'image' size 165 x 277 mm); matted, framed and glazed; the mount is a little unevenly discoloured; overall, in very presentable condition. The National Library of Australia records that the lithograph was published by J.G. Austin, Sydney, [1830s], and notes that John Carmichael (1803-1857) is possibly the artist. Certainly, this confronting image of a group of Aborigines drinking and fighting on the streets of Sydney is a far cry in both artistic form and visual content than 'Rodius's usual habit ... [of lending his subjects] an air of dignified simplicity and honesty rather than gauche excess' (Joanna Gilmour: 'Elegance in Exile - Portrait Drawings from Colonial Australia' (2012).
