"CHOCO", EDUARDO ROCA SALAZAR (Santiago de Cuba, Cuba, 1949). Untitled. Lithograph, copy 99/150. Signed and justified by hand. Made at the Taller Experimental de Gráfica de La Habana. Size: 54 x 39 cm. Eduardo Roca Salazar, better known as "Choco", is considered one of the great Cuban engravers of his generation, as well as one of the most important painters of the Cuban artistic scene. His style, characterised by remarkably worked surfaces, sustains a profoundly Afro-Cuban discourse and symbolism, even though the artist tries to reflect the racial diversity of the Cuban population. His works combine different facial characteristics: African mouths, oriental eyes and a wide range of skin tones give rise to universal figures, thus showing what the Cuban man is like. Likewise, through his refined technique, Choco confers to his canvases a great richness in his textures with which he manages to accentuate the contrast between lights and shadows. This intrinsic characteristic of his works endows them with a profound sensuality that tempts the viewer to touch them, while at the same time giving them a sensation of constant movement. After the triumph of the Revolution in 1959, Eduardo Roca Salazar (known artistically as Choco) trained at the Escuela Nacional de Instructores de Arte, as well as at the Escuela Nacional de Arte (ENA) alongside great artists such as Nelson Domínguez. Throughout his career, Eduardo Roca has been awarded the Grand Prize at the IV International Printmaking Triennial (1999) in Kochy, Japan. 1995; the Honourable Mention. First Biennial of Latin American and Caribbean Printmaking. Barranquilla, Colombia (1996); First Prize Drawing. Salón Nacional de Artes Plásticas UNEAC, Cuba (1985); First Prize Drawing. Salón Nacional de Artes Plásticas UNEAC, Havana, Cuba (1984); First Prize. International Competition of Engraving, "Pequeño Formato". Orense, Galicia (1981); Medal of Honour. International Graphic Salon. Sofia, Bulgaria. First Prize. Salón Nacional de Artes Plásticas UNEAC, Havana, Cuba (1978); First Prize for Drawing, FAR, Havana, Cuba (1977); First Prize for Engraving, Salón Nacional de Jóvenes, Havana, Cuba (1976). His works can be found in: Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Havana, Cuba; Centro Cultural Pablo de la Torriente Brau, Havana, Cuba; Ministerio de Cultura, Havana, Cuba; Oficina del Historiador de la ciudad, Havana, Cuba; Lonja del Comercio, Havana, Cuba; Palacio de Convenciones, Havana, Cuba; Museo de África, Chicago, USA; Museo de la Estampa, D.F. He studied at the Escuela de Instructores de Arte and the Escuela Nacional de Arte and he pursued postgraduate studies at the Facultad de Artes y Letras of the University of Havana. He is a member of the Union Nacional de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba (UNEAC), the Taller Experimantal de Grafica in Havana and the Asociacion Internacional de Artes Plasticos (AIAP). He has had a number of one-man shows since 1976 in Cuba and in Spain, Mexico, Colombia, Sweden and Japan. He has also taken part in numerous group shows nationally and internationally. In addition to winning a number of prizes and awards, his work can be found in Museum collections in Cuba, Mexico, Spain, Japan and the United States. Choco is one of the islands most distinguished printmakers and a national treasure. He utilizes a particular technique that he invented himself. Of his work one critic writes, “Eduardo Roca is one of those people who creates riches from a very rare personal harmony with their profession. His pictures, in the main tending towards symmetry and visual peace, possess inner rhythm and astute dynamism, producing complex effects whilst dealing with simple matters”. His current work is intense with color, with traditional elements done in a modern style. His work seems to be structured by three distinct elements: strong texture, strange atmospheres and a personal interlacing of spatial abstraction with silhouettes. His subjects sometimes are non-defined which open up a range of potential interpretations.
