Horatio Gordon Robley (28 June 1840 – 29 October 1930) was a British soldier, artist and collector of the macabre, including mokomokai. Robley was born at Funchal, Madeira on 28 June 1840, the son of Captain John Horatio Robley and Augusta June Penfold. Robley followed in his father's footsteps and became a professional soldier. However he also inherited his mother's artistic skills and became an accomplished sketcher and watercolourist.

      Pen and ink drawing, 20 x 13 cm, up. ri. inscribed 'Eye complete with 'and lo. le. inscribed 'Full size', unframed. - Provenance: From the estate of the Berlin dentist Prof. Wilhelm Dieck who was also member of the 'Berliner Gesellschaft für Anthropologie, Ethnologie und Urgeschichte'. - English soldier and explorer. Like his father, R. pursued a military career. He first served in Burma from 1858 and was already interested in local culture and society there; his talent for drawing was very useful to him. In 1863 he was sent to New Zealand and began documenting Maori culture, among it tattoos. He also had a collection of preserved Maori heads. In 1847 he quit the army and published the knowledge he had acquired in and about New Zealand.

      Major General Horatio Gordon Robley (British, 1840-1930) watercolor on cardstock painting titled "Another Bull," depicting soldiers at target practice while other soldiers watch, including an officer seated under a parasol. Signed "H. Robley" and dated "91" with additional writing below, " __ Ascot". Titled lower center with additional inscription "Captn. Menzies Wimbledon 1874" lower left. 7" x 10" cardstock; 11" x 14 1/4" matted. English, late 19th century. Note: Horatio Gordon Robley was a British soldier, watercolorist and noted collector of Maori heads. He frequently sketched and painted scenes from his military duties, which carried him to exotic locales around the world. He had an expertise in riflery and in 1871 transferred to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He also wrote the history of the regiment. This work may be an illustration for that undertaking.
