THEODORE ROBINSON (USA, 1852 - 1896). "Crepuscule sur La Feuilleraie". Oil on panel. Signed (illegible) in the lower margin. Period frame. It presents faults. Measurements: 34 x 45 cm; 36 x 66 x 5 cm (frame). Rural landscape painted by the North American Theodore Robinson in an early stage of his artistic career, when he was living in France and frequented the impressionists. Although this twilight landscape, with its amber lights and autumnal trees flanking a mansion, does not properly belong to Impressionism. Resolved with a synthetic stroke, it explores instead a personal and introspective style. Theodore Robinson was one of the first American impressionists. He began to develop this style in the late 1880s, visiting Giverny where he was best friends with Claude Monet. Many of his works are considered masterpieces of American Impressionism. At Giverny, Robinson painted what art historians consider to be his finest works. These paintings depict the surroundings of the village in different climates, in the Plenarist tradition. Robinson left France for the last time in 1892, although he intended to return. In the United States, he obtained a job at the Brooklyn Academy of Arts and also taught summer classes in Napanoch, New York near the Catskill Mountains, where he painted several landscapes. He also taught at Evelyn College, New Jersey and later at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. With New York as a base Robinson was able to relate to the American Impressionists. He maintained a close relationship with Johnny Henry Twatchman and Julian Alden Weir. He also spent part of his time in Connecticut. Here he painted a series of scenes with boats that are considered some of his best works. During the last year of his life, Robinson was asked to help complete a book of essays entitled "Modern French Masters" by editor and art historian Jon Charles Van Dyke. He wrote an article on the Barbizon painter Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, and wrote and illustrated another essay on Monet, his great friend. In 1895, he enjoyed a very productive period in Vermont, and in February 1896 he wrote to Monet telling him that he intended to return to Giverny. However, in April of the same year he died of an acute asthma attack in New York.

        Est: $4,500 - $6,500

Theodore Robinson (1852 - 1896) Oil on board, Signed Lower Right, Measures ( 7.5 x 9.5 inches ) w/frame ( 10 x 12 inches) A leading American Impressionist, Theodore Robinson was perhaps the most traditionally French in style. Originally from Wisconsin, he studied art in Chicago and New York before moving on to France for the better part of two decades. Arriving in 1876, he studied with Carolus Duran and Jean Leon Gerome. Duran was spontaneous, and one only has to see the work of John Singer Sargent to appreciate those qualities. On the other hand Gerome was meticulous, much like his American pupil Thomas Eakins. Robinson wanted to achieve both. He did this through pioneering use of photography, and well orchestrated, large-scale compositions. The subjects were a product of his rural American background, often relating the art of Winslow Homer, whose work he was known to have admired. Robinson worked on both sides of the Atlantic until 1884 when he made France his primary residence.

        Est: $4,000 - $6,000

THEODORE ROBINSON Portrait of Daniel Burleigh Parkhurst. Oil on canvas, circa 1895. 560x460 mm; 22x18 inches. Provenance: Collection of the sitter, the artist Daniel Burleigh Parkhurst; thence by descent; acquired by private collection, Massachusetts, 1993. Published: Daniel Burleigh Parkhurst, The Painter in Oil, Lee & Shepard, Boston, 1898, page 379 (illustrated). The current oil on canvas was used as an example of an ébouch, a preliminary study of composition and color or the under-painting in Parkhurst's treatise on oil painting technique, The Painter in Oil. This book was among the most popular art treatises of the time, detailed oil painting techniques dating back to the Old Masters. Robinson (1852-1896), who is among the leading American Impressionist artists of the time, produced this study of Parkhurst from a sitting of one and a half hours. During the mid to late 1880s, Robinson worked with Claude Monet at his home and gardens in Giverny, France. Though not formally a student of Monet's, he was, along with a small group of fellow American painters, permitted to work with the French Impressionist master and over six years in Giverny became a close friend of Monet and a member of his inner circle of fellow Impressionist artists.

Johnston, In Monet's Light: Theodore Robinson and Giverny, Baltimore, Maryland, 2004, pp. 192, 198. "Monet...said a good word for the Marie Trognon & bébé..." -excerpt from the diary of Theodore Robinson, September 16, 1892 Theodore Robinson holds a unique place in art history as one of the few American artists to have painted alongside the celebrated pioneer of French Impressionism, Claude Monet, and to have forged a truly close friendship with him. The relationship powerfully impacted Robinson's development into one of America's premier Impressionists, and arguably the most French of them all. Like Monet, Robinson banished black from his palette, and more than most Americans, allowed his broken brushwork to subjugate form in the interest of pure effects of light and color. In 1887, several years after completing his Parisian training under Carolus-Duran and Jean-Leon Gerome, Robinson decided to visit the small French farming village of Giverny, located on the Seine in Normandy, where Monet had settled four years prior. This visit, and the six extended stays to the artists' colony which followed between 1887 and 1892, proved to be a turning point in Robinson's career: he met, befriended and developed a close rapport with Monet. This turn of events was actually quite remarkable because Monet had been taking pains to avoid the American painters who had communed around him, considering them a nuisance-but Robinson for some reason was one exception. Once the two met, they formed a lasting bond that was both affable and creative. Robinson wrote of visiting with the reclusive artist, "Monet was cordiality, itself-It's very pleasant to think I have a place in his affection." (S. Johnston, In Monet's Light: Theodore Robinson at Giverny, p. 62) Indeed, Robinson was profoundly influenced by the dynamic brushwork, effervescent palette, and focus on light and color that were central to Monet's work, and wrote often in his personal diaries and letters about his frequent trips to the Master's home to discuss matters of art. Perhaps the most traditionally French in style among his expatriate peers, Robinson adopted the techniques of his mentor, but unlike Monet, focused his attention on images of peasant life. It was during this Giverny period that Robinson would paint what are widely considered his best works, melding a classic French Impressionist style with the American-favored subject of Normandy peasants, including the prese

Franklin, From France to the Green Mountains: Impressionism in Vermont, Walloomsack Review, Spring 2014, p. 35, illustrated. Masters of Impressionism and Beyond, Bennington, Vermont, 2007, p. 40, illustrated. Theodore Robinson, born in Irasburg, Vermont, was one of the earliest and most significant American artists to embrace Impressionism. Beginning in the late 1880s, many Americans gravitated toward the small French village of Giverny, northwest of Paris, drawn by the presence of Monet. Robinson arrived in Giverny around 1888 and came to be one of the few Americans the French master considered a friend. As a neighbor of Monet for more than four years, Robinson absorbed and adapted the Impressionist mode in his own work — his already painterly brushwork loosened further and his color palette brightened. Robinson returned to America in 1892 and immediately set out teaching and espousing the ideals of the Impressionist style. In 1895, Robinson returned "back to what I believe is my country," the state of Vermont, for a summer of painting and teaching. There, Robinson devoted himself to painting the region's rural villages, broad valleys, and sloping hills. His Vermont landscapes, which he found a little solider, better grasped, firmer" than those he had produced in France, would be his final legacy. This trip resulted in what are undoubtedly the earliest Impressionist paintings of the Green Mountains, including this fresh, spontaneous plein air sketch Jamaica, Vermont. Painted on April 10, 1895, Jamaica, Vermont lays bare the selective properties of vision, the artist's particular impression of a scene, translated through the artistic frame. Such is the effect of Impressionism, and Monet's influence is discernable in the painting's varied brushwork and high horizon line, which create an immediate effect of ornamental flatness." Yet even as Robinson adopted Monet's vigorous handling and heightened surfaces, he remained faithful to the muted tones, solid construction, and volumetric realism of the American tradition. Jamaica negotiates a complicated range of flatness and depth, shifting between two and three dimensions. This results largely from Robinson shifting between the conventions of French Impressionism, which dissolves solid form in light and atmosphere, and those of American landscape painting, which emphasizes volume, perspective, and mass." As Robinson adapted his French method to the landscape and art world of the United States, he developed an increasingly complex personal style—showing the beginnings of an evolution from Impressionism to abstraction. Sona Johnston, the curator of the 1973 Robinson retrospective, explains how "the disintegration of recognizable forms, ambiguous spatial relationships, and a freedom in the use of medium all imply the search for new methods of expression which consumed Robinson upon his return to America." <
