JEAN ROBIE (Brussels 1821-1910). Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower margin. Presents some damage to the frame. Measurements: 120 x 185 cm. The bouquets of roses, carnations and other floral species that decorate the opulent stone vase in the present painting of oval format overflow of summer freshness. Through a luminous palette and bold brushwork, the Belgian painter Jean Robie conveys the fragrant atmosphere of the palatial garden that opens up behind the splendid still life. The fleshy petals of the corollas are entwined in neat garlands, caressed by the warm midday light. Belgian painter Jean-Baptiste Robie studied with Balthasar Tasson at the art academy in Brussels. Although he first came to public attention for his portraits of Napoleon, he is best known for his still lifes. Because of the fame his still lifes brought him, he was nicknamed "the lover of roses". His still life paintings are characterized by their faithful use of color, clarity and attention to detail. Robie traveled frequently in Europe, visiting Italy, Spain, France and Germany. He also went to the Middle East and wrote one of his most famous travel books, Les Débuts d 'un Peintre (1886), in India. Robie exhibited at the Brussels Salon between 1843 and 1875 and also received numerous medals. His work was first shown at the Paris Salon of 1863. In 1880 he exhibited at the Palais des Beaux-Arts and in 1885 at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. He was later appointed Knight of the Order of Leopold (in 1861, then Officer in 1869, and finally Commander of the Order of Leopold on May 4, 1881, after his immense success during a grandiose exhibition on the occasion of the inauguration of the new Palais des Beaux-Arts.

Housed in a period gilt frame with molded-composition ornament and modern liner. Third quarter 19th century. 8 1/2" x 12" panel, 20 3/4" x 16 3/4" OA. Catalogue Note: Jean-Baptiste Robie (1821-1910) studied as a young man at the Academie Des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and was a popular painter during his lifetime. We would like to thank Kathleen de Fays, President, Foundation Jean Robie, for her invaluable cataloguing assistance, which will be included in the forthcoming online catalogue raisonne of the artist. Lot note: The present lot by the artist Jean Robie is quite possibly a sketch for a larger painting. Robie's larger, more finished compositions are typically meticulously finished, which supports that this painting is a study, with its more roughly executed brushstrokes. The bouquet of flowers on the ground is typical of the artist's placement, with the stems to the left, the open flowers bright with shimmering oranges, yellows, reds, and pinks in the center, and the flower buds in the dark background. The shadow and light, as well as the intensity of color, are likewise characteristic of works by the artist. Additionally, the beveled mahogany panel and white ground, visible around the edges, were both regularly used by Robie.

Jean Baptiste Robie (1821 - 1910) Still Life With Rose and Fruit Oil on Panel. Artist hand signed on lower left. Jean Baptiste Robie was known for his floral still lives of all types but he was 'master' of the rose. He also painted landscapes but his specialty and recognition came from the floral studies. He debuted at the Salon de Brussels in 1843, exhibiting there in 1848, 1854, 1857, 1860, 1863, 1867 and 1875. He was awarded the Knight of the Order of Leopold in 1861, the Knight of the Legion d'Honneur an officer of the Order of Leopold in 1869 and then a commander of the Order of Leopold in 1881. Robie lived much of the time in London between 1848 and 1875 and established his reputation in the International market while there by exhibiting at the Royal Academy. Although, he traveled extensively to Italy, Spain, England, Germany, France, Egypt, Palestine, Syria, and India. His paintings are included in the collection of museums in Brussels, Ghent, Boston, Brooklyn, Hamburg, Lille, Minneapolis, Sydney and Florence. In weiter Landschaft seitlich eines braunen Baumstumpfes mit einem Ast grüner Blätter, der fast die linke Bildseite einnimmt, auf einem Steinboden liegend, das prachtvolle Früchtearrangement: eine Honigmelone, Rispen mit blauen und hellen Weintrauben, teils mit Lichtreflexen, zwei Äpfel, ein Zierkürbis, eine Fleischtomate und ein paar Himbeeren mit Blättern. Im Hintergrund rechts geht der Blick in eine weite Landschaft unter hohem Himmel mit weißen Wolkenformationen. Das Licht fällt aus unbekannter Quelle von vorne auf die fast naturalistisch wiedergegebenen Früchte und hebt sie gegenüber dem dunklen Hintergrund hervor. Retuschen. Der Künstler war ein bekannter Maler von Landschaften, Blumen und Früchten, zudem als Schriftsteller tätig. Er malt mit Charme, Präzision und Klarheit, wie auch auf dem vorliegenden Gemälde feststellbar ist. Er hat seine Malobjekte meist nach festem Konzept zusammengestellt. ROSEN Öl auf Holz. 39 x 43 cm. Rechts unten signiert „J Robie“. In dekorativem vergoldetem Rahmen. Vor grau-grünem Hintergrund in Nahsicht auf einer hellen Wiese liegend ein prachtvoller Blumenstrauß, bestehend aus gefüllten rosafarbenen Rosen, gelb-orange leuchtenden Rosen sowie einer großen dunkelroten, samtig glänzenden Rose mit entsprechenden Blättern und einige noch geschlossene Blütenknospen. Hinter diesem Strauß sind zudem zwei weitere kleine Blühpflanzen erkennbar. Qualitätvolle hervorragende Malerei des für seine Blumenstillleben bekannten Künstlers. (1221359) (18)
