    (Massachusetts. 1828-1905), oil on canvas, 14 x 10 inches, signed lower right, Doll and Richards Gallery label on reverse, framed. Small paint scratch at top edge. Ellen Robbins was a well known 19th c. New England painter of flowers. She painted flowers from the gardens of poet Celia Thaxter, and her paintings were exhibited at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. Some of her paintings were reproduced by Louis Prang as chromolithographs.

    Ellen Robbins (1828-1905), Dated 1891, Watercolor / Paper, Still Life of flowers. Ellen Robbins earned her artistic reputation as a watercolorist, especially of autumn leaves and flowers. She attended the New England School of Design in Boston for one year and studied privately with Stephen Tuckerman and at the Merrimac Printworks. She had difficulty finding a teacher of watercolors, so she essentially taught herself to paint with the medium.     Ellen Robbins (1828 - 1905) Watercolor on Paper Signed and dated 1891 in lower right. Size: O: 18 3/4 x 19 1/4" S: 11 1/4 x 12 1/4" Ellen Robbins earned her artistic reputation as a watercolorist, especially of autumn leaves and flowers. She attended the New England School of Design in Boston for one year and studied privately with Stephen Tuckerman and at the Merrimac Printworks. She had difficulty finding a teacher of watercolors, so she essentially taught herself to paint with the medium. Reportedly born in 1828 in Watertown, Massachusetts, (that is not documented-Sternberg), she developed the idea of creating albums of watercolors, which became very popular. She sold her first album for twenty-five dollars. Sculptor Harriet Hosmer, a childhood friend, was among her early collectors.

    Robbins 1883" l.r. Watercolor on paper, sight size 18 3/4 x 14 1/4 in. (48 x 36.4 cm), framed. Condition: Subtle toning and fading, not examined out of frame. N.B. Ellen Robbins, a Massachusetts native, is best known for her floral still lifes. She often drew her inspiration from friend Celia Thaxter's garden on the Isles of Shoals, a favorite summer vacation spot. It has been noted that Robbins' work often resembles pressed flowers, a popular nineteenth century female pastime. Robbins work was recently included in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, exhibition A Studio of Her Own, Fall 2001.
