    Jan. 03, 2025

    JULIAN RIX (1850-1903)

    Est: $800 - $1,200

Coastal Landscape Oil on canvas 12 x 16 inches Artist Background: Known for poetic landscapes, often sunset, illuminated by atmospheric light, Julian Walbridge Rix was early in his career an active painter in California and then on the East Coast. He was born in Peacham, Vermont on December 30, 1850 and moved with his family to San Francisco in 1853. He became close friends with Amédée Joullin and Jules Tavernier, and when the latter established an art colony in Monterey in 1876, Rix was one of the "Bohemians" who followed him there. His studio in Monterey was in the French Hotel, but in 1879 he returned to San Francisco and shared a studio with Tavernier at 729 Montgomery Street. The art market in San Francisco during this period was not a healthy one which prompted Rix to move to Paterson, New Jersey in 1880 and subsequently establish a studio in New York City. This milieu was what he seemed to need to find artistic success. His work was exhibited at the National Academy of Design during the 1880s. He studied art briefly in Europe during 1889 and upon his return, he found that his watercolor and oil paintings were in great demand in the East. He maintained an active interest and participation in the San Francisco art scene and in 1883 sent back 200 paintings for a successful solo show. In 1888 his illustrations appeared in "Picturesque California." Rix returned to California for several months in 1901 and painted the valleys and mountains near Monterey and Santa Barbara.

JULIAN WALBRIDGE RIX AMERICAN, CALIFORNIA, VERMONT, 1850-1903 CALIFORNIA COASTAL LANDSCAPE Oil on canvas Lower right signed: Julian Rix Catalogue note: Julian Rix worked as an apprentice sign painter in San Francisco and studied briefly at the California School of Design. While in school, he befriended fellow artists Amédée Joullin (1862–1917) and Jules Tavernier (1844–1899). Both Tavernier and Rix joined the Bohemian Club and moved to the burgeoning art colony in Monterey. Rix worked there for several years at a hillside studio. He returned to San Francisco in 1879 and shared a studio with Tavernier on Montgomery Street. In 1880, due to the depressed art market in San Francisco, Rix moved to the East Coast, settling in Paterson, New Jersey, and establishing a studio in New York City. There he enjoyed commercial success with his watercolor and oil paintings, exhibiting at the National Academy of Design. Despite his exodus from the West Coast, Rix remained interested in the San Francisco art community; in 1883, he sent two hundred paintings there for a solo exhibition. In 1888, he was one of the artists who contributed images for Picturesque California, a journal of writings and illustrations edited by naturalist John Muir that represented the natural wonders and spectacular scenery of the thirty-first state. Despite the fact that he had little formal training, Rix achieved great success with his work, especially his poetic landscapes. He adopted the French Barbizon style, whose proponents advocated realistic, not idealized, interpretations of nature. Like William Keith and Thomas Hill, Rix sought to create poetic yet truthful renditions of nature and shunned the idealized and constructed views of the more romantic images of the time. • Winter in Yosemite Valley Block Print by Julian Rix [177780]
    Apr. 06, 2024

Winter in Yosemite Valley Block Print by Julian Rix [177780]

    Est: $200 - $400

Block print taken from an original oil painting by Julian Walbridge Rix (1850-1903). Piece is done on silk and measures 11"x 14" and has some minor staining on outer edges of picture. Rix was born in Vermont to parents who caught gold fever and emigrated to San Francisco. After his mother died, he was sent back east by his father, where he received an education. He returned to San Francisco in 1868 and worked as a sign and house painter. While painting signs, young Julian began painting landscapes which drew the positive attention of local art critics. He may have received encouragement from Albert Bierstadt, whose brother Edward was married to Rix[x=#8217/]s aunt. Despite his father[x=#8217/]s disapproval of his art career, Julian spent a year painting in New England and New York before returning to San Francisco to study briefly at the School of Design under Virgil Williams and Thomas Hill. He was invited to join the Bohemian Club in 1876 when he was 26 years of age and he became close friends with bohemian artists AmÈdÈe Joullin (1862[x=#8211/]1917), Jules Tavernier (1844[x=#8211/]1899), Rix did several landscape paintings for Harper's Weekly, to aid their call for conservation of the yet unsettled forests and wild lands on both coasts. In 1888, he was one of the artists who contributed images for Picturesque California, the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Slope, a journal of writings and illustrations edited by naturalist John Muir that represented the natural wonders and spectacular scenery of the thirty-first state. In 1889 Rix took a sketching trip to England, Germany, and the Netherlands. In the 1890s, his work became more influenced by the French Barbizon School and impressionism. After a visit to San Francisco in 1901 as his health was fading, Rix visited with bohemian friends including William Keith, and soon died in his New York studio after an emergency kidney surgery at age 53. Estranged from his family, Rix left his estate in the hands of his friend and patron John Ryle. Julian Rix was a god parent of Ryle[x=#8217/]s daughter and he is buried in the Ryle's family plot. The Society of California Pioneers collection has three Julian Rix landscape paintings. There are a few other lots in the auction of Rix's works. Please see photos for more details. California
