      JUAN MANUEL RIVERO PRIETO (Antilla, Cuba, 1976). Untitled, 2016. Mixed media on canvas. With a small crack in the lower right corner. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Size: 89 x 130 cm. The Cuban painter Juan Rivero began his training at the Escuela Profesional de Artes Plásticas "El Alba" in Holguín, where he graduated in painting (1991-95). He then entered the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana, again in painting, graduating in 2001. Between 2001 and 2005 he worked as a teacher at the Academia de Pintura San Alejandro and as a curator at the Centro de Diseño y Artes Visuales "Luz y Oficios", both in the Cuban capital. In parallel, between 2001 and 2008, he curated the five editions of Proyecto Circo (International Performance and Audiovisual Event), also held in Havana. In 2003 he also received grants from the Foundation Hivos and Triangle Trust ("Proyecto Batiscafo") and the Ludwig Foundation ("Antonia Eiriz") in Havana. Finally settled in Castellón de la Plana, Spain, Rivero is currently working in the painting and engraving workshops of Juan García Ripollés. In parallel to this ongoing training activity, the Cuban artist has been making his work known in Cuba, Colombia, Spain and Brazil since the late 1990s. He made his solo debut in 1998 with an exhibition entitled "El objeto del Eterno", held at the Casa de la Cultura de Plaza in Havana. Juan Rivero has been awarded the UNESCO Prize for the Promotion of the Arts at the 7th Havana Biennial (2000), the Curatorial Prize for the exhibition "Con un pensar abstraído" (DUPP Gallery, Havana, 2001) and the Curatorial Project Prize for "Proyecto Circo Travelling", awarded by the Spanish Embassy in Cuba and the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (2006).
