Oil on canvas Austria, around 1870 Attributed to Alexander Ritter von Bensa (1820-1902) – Austrian genre and battle painter Alexander Ritter von Bensa is well-known for his depictions of soldiers and villages, which remind of the Biedermeier style of artists such as August von Pettenkofen (1822-1889) Overall dimensions, framed: 47 x 39 cm Very good condition Provenance: Auktionshaus Zeller (2009); Estate of an Austrian private collection The present painting depicts an aristocratic society on a ride through the forest. The group is headed by an elegantly dressed lady, riding on the back of a beautiful white horse. She is followed by a gentleman, dressed with a red suit, as it was typical for English riders at that time. The work is not signed, but is attributed to the artist Alexander Ritter von Bensa, as it clearly corresponds with his Biedermeier paintings. The painting is in very good condition considering its age. The frame is also in very good condition with minimal traces of age and use. A label has been later added to the back side, rendering some hand-written information. The framed work measures 47 x 39 cm. The stretcher measures 36.5 x 28.5 cm. (cbo) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

Alexander Ritter von Bensa II (1820-1902) Alexander von Bensa studied in 1838/39 at the landscape school of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Franz Steinfeld and Thomas Ender. His first exhibition took place in 1841 as part of the Academy exhibition. Later exhibitions followed in the Künstlerhaus and the Austrian Kunstverein in Vienna. Under the influence of Anton von Pettenkofen von Bensa turned to the subject of battle painting and the depiction of scenes from the lives of Hungarian people. After an accident in the winter of 1889 he was paralyzed in his last years. Works by the artist can be found among others in the Albertina in Vienna.
