ALEXANDRE DE RIQUER INGLADA (Calaf, Barcelona, 1856 - Palma de Mallorca, 1920). "Modernist lady with dandelion", ca. 1900. Pencil and ink drawing on paper for magazine illustration or illustrated book. Signed in the lower corner A de Riquer "Alexandre de Riquer". Measurements: 32.5 x 27 cm; 53 x 46 cm (frame). Original drawing used for the realization of an engraving. It has been preserved in a private collection a copy of this very rare engraving made by Alexandre de Riquer and the metal plate used for the realization of the same. The composition shows a beautiful woman blowing a dandelion. It shows 3 proposals with which Alexandre de Riquer could modify the composition of the face using the same image of the body. Many times what Riquer did to create new works was to turn the work horizontally to create a new one that did not resemble the original at first glance. This drawing was the starting point for the realization of this engraving, Josep Monsalvatge's 1905 bookplate with which he took the same composition and modified the dandelion for a book. It was also the source of inspiration for an oil painting entitled "The Nymph" also kept in a private collection. Drawer, painter and poet, de Riquer began his studies in Manresa and Languedoc, France. Back in Barcelona, he completed his training with Tomás Padró and Antoni Caba, at La Lonja. ALEXANDRE DE RIQUER INGLADA (Calaf, Barcelona, 1856 - Palma de Mallorca, 1920). "Pair of proofs for the engraving of Alfonso XIII", 1904.

    Est: €3,000 - €3,400

ALEXANDRE DE RIQUER INGLADA (Calaf, Barcelona, 1856 - Palma de Mallorca, 1920). "Pair of proofs for the engraving of Alfonso XIII", 1904. Measurements: 23.5 x 16 cm (each); 42 x 53 cm (frame). Alexandre de Riquer was commissioned by the Royal House to make this exlibris through the Civil Governor of Barcelona, Gonzàlez Rothovoss. Riquer's initial project was discarded because it contained nude female figures. What Riquer did at that time was to cover with clothes the women who would appear nude and were now partially clothed. For the realization of this engraving, Alexandre de Riquer made 4 copper plates: one green, one yellow, one red and finally one black. The printing of these engravings was done in the workshop of the engraver Furnó. The original drawing that Riquer made for this exlibris is conserved in the Library of the Royal Palace of Madrid. Two completely unpublished letters received by the Civil Governor of Barcelona, Gonzàlez Rothovoss, from Alfonso XIII's royal steward have been preserved. In the first letter dated April 18, 1904, the royal butler writes: "My distinguished friend: I have had the honor of placing in the hands of His Majesty the King the artistic Exlibris that Mr. Riquer has so attentively dedicated. The august gentleman who has received with the greatest pleasure the gift instructs me to convey to Mr. Riquer the most appreciated thanks for his delicate attention, begging you at the same time to signify to him His Majesty's desire to possess another Exlibris with special drawings executed by the aforementioned gentleman." This first letter preserved by Alexandre de Riquer, was surely written after the receipt of one of the proofs of the exlibris that Riquer would have sent to the civil governor to be sent to the king for his approval. Subsequent to this letter, the modification of the naked women was requested. In a later letter written from San Sebastian on August 10, 1904, the royal butler writes: "My distinguished friend: With your kind letter I have received the drawing that Mr. Riquer dedicates to His Majesty the King to whom I have had the honor of delivering it. The august gentleman has seen with great pleasure the artistic work of Mr. Riquer, which I return to him as he indicated in his letter so that he can proceed to its engraving. With this motive and begging him to transmit the thanks of S. M. to the author of the exlibris". This letter, as we can see, traveled with the final original drawing once the modifications were made. The original drawing was returned to them so that they could correctly make the plates for the final engraving. The two engraving proofs presented in this auction are part of one of the execution proofs that Riquer made after receiving the approval of H. M. King Alfonso XIII. One of them is especially rare as it does not include the black plate with the oval coat of arms of Spain nor the signature or date of Alexandre de Riquer among other elements that were on the black plate. As we can see there were 4 plates that were in some cases superimposed on each other. The other specimen presented here is a final engraving proof in which the 4 overlapping color proofs are included, showing a final engraving very similar to the one that was finally delivered to King Alfonso XIII and which he liked so much. As for the exlibris, the central oval coat of arms is the coat of arms of Spain. The central coat of arms that appears in the composition within this coat of arms is the coat of arms of the Bourbons. The outline of the royal coat of arms consists of the necklace of the Golden Fleece. Crowning the composition is an imposing royal crown. The coat of arms has two Ionic columns that serve as supports, one on each side. These have decorative motifs with floral motifs and fruits. There are also four nymphs, two seated at the base and two more standing. These figures are the ones that Riquer had to modify by indications of his majesty the king".

ALEXANDRE DE RIQUER INGLADA (Calaf, Barcelona, 1856 - Palma de Mallorca, 1920). Cover of the book "Popular Astronomy", 1901. Drawing in ink and chalk on paper. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 30 x 26 cm; 49 x 44,5 cm (frame). Alexandre de Riquer also made in 1901 an Ex-libris for Rafael Patoxt where Urania, the muse of Astronomy, is also shown. In the ex-libris she appears reading a book surrounded by stars, the same as in the composition he made for the cover. This curiosity is due to the fact that the two pieces must have been made at the same time, since the stars, the outline of the figure and the contrast of the hanging black and white volumes are very similar in both works. Between 1890 and 1916, the publishing house Montaner y Simón Editores of Barcelona published a series of works in deluxe bindings with illustrated covers. Many of these covers were made by artists such as Alexandre de Riquer, Adrià Gual, Gaspar Camps, Josep Triadó or Josep Pascó among others. This collection of illustrated books quickly became collector's items. Their illustrated covers and elaborate spines allowed the collection to be unified. Alexandre de Riquer was in charge of illustrating seven of the covers of this collection. So far it was known that he had illustrated six of them: "Para ellas: colección de Novelitas y Cuentos originales" by Adela Sánchez Cantos de Escobar (1896), "La ciencia moderna: sus tendencias y cuestiones con ella relacionadas" by Julio Broutá (1897), "El ídolo de Garcia Lavedese "(1897), "Antología Americana" (1897), "La perfecta casada" by Fray Luís de León (1898), "Cantares" by Melchor de Palau (1900) and "Astronomía popular" (1901). Alexandre de Riquer worked with this collection between 1896 and 1901. Until now it was unknown that Alexandre de Riquer also made the cover of the book "Astronomía popular" (1901), which appears on the cover signed under the name of Josep Triadó, but in reality was mostly executed by Alexandre de Riquer and adapted to the editorial needs by Josep Triadó, who continued working on this series for a few more years. We believe that Alexandre de Riquer delivered the cover project to the publisher but due to incorrect dimensions, Josep Triadó had to enlarge Riquer's project and add the title Astronomía Popular and lengthen Riquer's composition with a globe. When adapting Riquer's original project they had to remove his original signature and so Josep Triadó signed the title page, which has led experts and historians who have studied this collection to think that the title page was the work of this artist. Alexandre de Riquer made the illustrations for the interiors of the following books of this same collection: "Si yo fuera rico!" (1896), "Vida de la Virgen María" according to the venerable "Sor María de Jesús de Agreda" (1899) and an illustration for the "Libro de oro de la vida" (1905). In this auction we present the original drawings for the first and the last cover that Alexandre de Riquer made for this collection of illustrated books. Three of the other covers he made for this collection are preserved in the MNAC (La ciencia moderna, El ídolo and Antología Americana). The covers of the book Cantares and La perfecta casada are unaccounted for.

Collection of Novelitas y Cuentos originales de Adela Sánchez Cantos de Escobar (1896)", 1896. Ink drawing on paper. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 31 x 24 cm; 45 x 41 cm (frame). The cover project by Alexandre de Riquer is composed of three very well ordered levels. Riquer was also in charge of the design of the spine, which in this case, unlike many of the other spines in the collection, was designed exclusively for this work. This book was printed in dark green and a small run in red. The central scene shows two women seated in a garden. One of them holds a book while the other listens to her explanations. Riquer's project is signed and dated in the lower left corner and the dimensions of the drawing are 31 x 24 cm. Measurements: 37 x 38 cm; 43 x 43 cm (frame). In 1907 Alexandre de Riquer designed an ex-libris for Emilio de Riquer. So far the original drawing made by Alexandre de Riquer (which is in a private collection) was known, but no reproduction of it in any format was known. This ex-libris was made from the poster project of "Mosaicos Hidráulicos Órsola Solá y Cía" made in 1989. Drawer, painter and poet, de Riquer began his studies in Manresa and Languedoc, France.
